Bedroom Cabinets...what to do??

I recently purchased a 1925 bungalow. The whole house has been remodeled and has some quirks, such as the main bedroom. There is no closet in the actual bedroom (it's in the hallway outside the bedroom), but instead there's these cabinets that start about four feet off the ground. They can not be turned into a full length closet as the stairs to the basement are below them. I feel like it's wasted space and I'm just stumped on how to make these work for me and the bedroom.

I'm desperate for some help/ideas on what to do here!

I don't think any storage is wasted space, LOL. Put some shelves in there or find stacking bins that fit. I have a cabinet like this and store shoes and hats in it.

If you find the cabinet unsightly, paint it to blend in. Or remove the doors and hide it all with art in a custom frame. That would make it slightly more difficult to access, so it would be "long term" storage, like holiday decor.

Yes it is! As you can see I'm using it for 'storage' for now.

If you want to store clothing there, I would create a cabinet box in the space behind and install shelves, or if you still want to get to the rest of the storage back there, get freestanding drawers that could open through the doors (an example would be elfa drawer units, but you could pick a different brand or style).

Looking again ... is only one door functional? or are we looking in and across to another similar door in another room?

You're looking in and across. So across is one small door that is useless as it's above half the staircase. Across from the other door, not pictured, is two cabinet doors the same size as the bedroom side that they put drywall over and if opened, would go into the kitchen.

As others have posted, I don't think any storage is wasted space.

I would probably store items that are used in the bedroom - it really could be anything - bed linens; what you sleep in; your sweats or other home leisure or work out clothing; underwear. I have a closet that I pass on the way to my master bath and when I had the interior done I had a bureau installed there which I use in that manner - all the things I access for use in the bedroom or bathroom.
