Agree the first photo looks like Carex buchananii or possibly flagellifera (habit looks a little floppy for buchananii).

Second photo could be Carex testacea, orange sedge. It starts out more of an olive green then rapidly transitions to orange. Both buchananii and flagellifera are everbronze/copper - no green, ever.

@Jay 6a Chicago, Thank you, and I am not sure, but that is what the landscaper told me. I can ask where he got them, and watch for seed heads. Probably from a place he told me about in Dixon or Davis, California. I think Redwood Barn.

Thanks everyone! I'm mainly asking because I'm wanting to use the right drip irrigation settings. Some carex seem to be bog plants, and others drought tolerant after they are "established ". These are on the same station with rosemary and nandina, under redwoods in dry sort of dappled shade, but sometimes scorching sun. There are also a few heuchera, foxtail fern, a New Zealand flax, and a maple (Bloodgood?) , and those are mostly in shade.

I really like the plant in the second picture, but the ones in the first picture, not so much.

All three are Carex species native to New Zealand. None are bog plants but I would not consider them overly drought tolerant either. All 3 would appreciate a periodic deep soaking in dry weather. Ideal siting is typically described as "moist, fertile, well drained soils" in full sun to part shade.

They are also not particularly hardy, typically rated only to 15F. I believe these species are much more commonly planted here on the west coast than in the east.
