need advice on staircase landing

Hello: I just installed cable rail outside and it was fairly easy. I have to redo the interior stairway of our cabin. Should I do cable here, too, or vertical black aluminum? I don’t have to worry about young kids climbing on the rail. Thank you for any advice.

I would probably do cable, for consistency.

    Keep it consistent.🙂

I think if this is a cabin for your use for a long time do what you like but just remember the horizontal cable railing is not to code in most places either inside or outside .

Thank you! Yes, I will check to ensure it is to code. The cable is less expensive, too.

The "ladder effect" code was repealed and not replaced as there was no math to support it.

A beautiful LiteMirror would really bring some brightness to the space! check out LiteMirrors website! LiteMirror Website

Cable is usually used to "disappear" and open up the view - not really what your space needs - it needs the decor and to be a statement in of itself. I love the black aluminum, it's very modern, is modern your direction in general? If it is it would be great!

You have soooo much brown wood, I think it would look great to add black vertical balusters, either plain or a twist design

All that lovely, warm wood has horizontal lines. Both rail choices are also horizontal…that will be a lot of horizontal lines. If your heart is set on horizotal rails my thinking is for the cable rail with a wood top rail so that it doesn't compete with the walls, the black railing could look quite busy.

You've had some great recommendations here. I wasn't able to put my finger on it, but the commenters who said "there is a lot of wood there, how about a contrasting element rather than a disappearing element" and "there are lots of horizontal there, how about something different to balance." I think that is some great advice to consider. Good luck!

I like the black with cabling to break up the wood look in the interior-good, clean, open, consistent with the exterior.

I don’t care for the cable inside for your project. I would prefer to see vertical black iron or ironlike spindles. Horizontal would add too much “horizontals” because of the horizontal wood walls

I prefer the metal railings, which would be a nice accent to your wood walls. Cable railing is usually used because it doesn't block light and views. I think it might get lost against the walls.

What about safety glass panels. Keep open feeling. If that does appeal and you have contemporary features in the interior, my preference is black horizontal metal.

If you get a little sunlight through the window, you might consider a variety of philodendron. They thrive in low light and add an oxygen boost. I would invest in a beautiful planter to add a bit of color to the corner and a stand to raise it a little bit off of the floor.

Black vertical balusters with a nice wooden top rail that matches the rest of the cabin wood. Also wood support posts between sections of balusters.

Thank you, everyone for the suggestions. I did a mock up with the black horizontal railing. It does look a bit busy. There is something I don’t love about cable railing (yet I like it in the photo I supplied) so the idea of a beautiful top railing is a nice one to offset the black posts and aluminum rails. I will keep you all “posted”… sorry for the bad pun.

I agree that the cabin could benefit from a strong vertical element at the stairs. I would not do the cable. I would select a simple black iron railing like you see below.

I like metal vs cable in this space. I'll admit though, that just looking at the picture makes me afraid of falling down the stairs. So my choice is all psychology, not good design. I like Flo's horizontal metal picture of all posted.

Stupid idea…I like color. Ever think of painting the wall above the wood a favorite bright color and having the metal styles painted the same color? I know… You probably don't like it. I could see a colorful quilt piece or other art piece there and bring out a bright color in it. Anyway, good luck with the stairs.

Thanks KL. I did add a tapestry there, and think color is a good idea. This photo was when I bought it. I will post soon, as I will go with vertical metal posts. Thanks Beverly for the great ideas!

IMS_1209, I love puns! I'm glad you didn't hate the idea of some color. A tapestry sounds great. Glad you settled on a staircase. Have you mulled over the idea of adding a pendant light fixture? I can't have one in my stairs so I want one for everyone who can. Projecting I guess…

So here is my idea. I wanted to do something similar to this design. But the price for a 4x3x3 landing is $6k. I know that’s the price of custom. Wondering if any one has some ideas on how to do this at a lesser cost with similar design or aesthetic. The horizontal railing came in at $4500 less.
