Gary, which one is this? I did not site Bloodline well……..it started burning during that awful heat wave we had as did many others. It’s been protected by an umbrella for a good part of the summer, still is. I have to move it, I remember you saying, morning sun.

This red hosta is a beauty! The May coloring is to die for!!

This is from a earlier post (My Seedling bed page 5 in the forum) This is its second year and is a third generation bred down from First Blush. I'm trying to prolong the red effect to last into the Summer. We've also had several days of 90 degree plus weather, so I'm pleased that I have any red showing now at all.

That is really cool! How much sun does it get and how much sun does your First Blush get?

The "seedling bed" is under a honey locust tree so early Spring until early Summer it gets quite a bit of sun. Now just dappled sun and more shade. The First Blush is in another section of Garden where it get a few hours of morning sun and a few hours of late afternoon sun. Probably not as much light as it needs to really blush up like it should.

So coloring depends on daylight length and temps?

My First Blush is growing well, but isn't in enough sun to do much "blushing." I'll have to find a place to move it to.

I just moved my Bloodline……..it should get early morning sun and maybe some late afternoon sun. I hope it will do better. The roots and crown looked great! 👍🏽👍🏽

bloodline has gotten better with age. the cool spring helped. actually the cool spring nights triggered all the blushers. great year for that. its probably not possible to keep the dark colors all season. as the sugars and anthocyanin degrade new sugars will get directed to the scape, flower and pod during the reproductive phase.

some varieties will show hints of it on new growth as it protects it from the sun.

but alas there wont be anything that can keep up with these quick surges of 70 to 100 degree heat. in the future there will be no direct sun tolerant hosta without experiencing some scorching

This bright yellow flashes the color only for a few days

This one shows red has moved into the bract, and scape. sugar diversion.

Would adding certain ferilizers help? Like molasses?
