seeking bright light for study

Traditional study but no overhead light. Too dark to be used. Having ceiling light added. Need suggestions for fixture or would flush lighting be better? Old Picture just to show furniture. Just had it painted shoji white painted Shoji

Also, desk faces out to foyer. Would it look better if it faced the front (only) windows? Thanks!

Whenever I've had offices, I always turned off any ceiling fixture, which are usually too harsh, and added table lamps and accent lights. Are there any lights inside, on top of or under the side cabinets of the big piece behind the desk? LEDs can work miracles there. Are your curtains blocking light? Perhaps they should be hung wider. If you receive clients here, then facing the foyer is more welcoming. If not, you might turn it so you're sitting with the window behind you for light coming over your shoulders. Do you use a computer or laptop? Glare needs to be considered too. If you do add a ceiling fixture, I suggest a semi-flush one with a diffusing shade.

We need the credenza behind the desk. I wonder if I should just put a curtain panel on just side of windows and just leave wall between windows bare? Before I had curtains covering all the wall. Thanks for your thoughts!.

I like to have my desk facing the door. There's something uncomfortable for me about any other arrangement. As for lighting, I have recessed lighting in the four corners, a center semi-flush fixture and a desk lamp. The ceiling fixtures provide good general illumination. If you're always on the computer and not working with paper at all you may be able to get away without a desk lamp. I have one that is adjustable so I can angle it just the way I want.

You have dark heavy furnishing and rug. The eye reads that as dark, and it actually soaks up the day light. I would take the hutch portion off the back unit and turn it into more of a credenza. Replace the rug. A torchier lamp maybe a solution to get some light around the room, rather than the table lamp as well. bouncing light off the walls and ceiling can be useful fill light. Task light remains with the desk lamp.

Thank you. Since this picture was taken I put light grasscloth on backs of credenza shelves. Helped some.

They are all nice looking! I went ahead with a flush led light with a dimmer switch. The color temperature is adjustable as well from dimmest to brightest daylight. The light is diffuse and very functional for us. Thanks for all the comments!
