Toss the shutters. The front door would look good in a deeper pewter gray color and mount a much larger black lantern beside it.

    Cute house. It looks well-kept.

Don't go too dark with the exterior color. A lighter gray is more appropriate to the style of the house. The same color door you already have will work with gray also.

^Love kandrewspa’s example. Tons of options for door color. A slate blue would be nice. Agree with no shutters.

    No shutters

Invest in some proper sturdy steps that extend past the door. See below.

Consider a canopy over the door to keep guests dry.

Such a cute house!! Another vote for No Shutters. What about a teal door? Or be bold and do yellow?

    Window boxes for the win!

Agree with no shutters, window boxes instead. I like the slate blue door.

No shutter but consider a front porch on that cutie.

The shutters on your house are obviously not functional and aren't sized appropriately for the windows. That being said they do add a little color at least. I would say opt for window boxes instead as they would add color also but they do require maintenance.

One more vote for kissing the shutters goodbye since they are confusing visually and fight with the door for attention. You might want to paint the window trim a contrasting color as kandrewspa shows. The door, on the other hand, is too subdued and emphasizing it more will add to curb appeal. Because there is a slight asymmetry in the door placement, I’d play around with a larger lantern to see if that gives a stronger feeling of balance. Some extra trim as Interior Functions IF suggests would be great, as would giving guests a larger landing pad or as BeverlyFLADziner points out. This house is already cute now but is going to absolutely rock with a little paint and wider steps!

The shutters look hokie! (as most fake shutters do). The rule of thumb on shutters is to have them 1/2 the width of windows on each side - the size to make them look real and if they could be closed and cover the windows. This house would be MUCH cuter without the fake shutters!

I love shutters in the right situation, but agree that your house would look better without. I love Capes, and your house is adorabale.

Super cute house! I agree with ditching the shutters! A deep shade of berry for the door is nice with Revere Pewter, and maybe a lighter shade for window boxes. Shades of berry

Remove the shutters. Paint a darker gray around the windows. SW Intense teal for the door.

Ok, no one likes shutters. I own a Cape Cod and I like shutters . They are a classic look. I'd prefer ones that really work but... Anyway, I you remove the shutters then you will Need to paint or replace the siding because the shutters have protected the siding from the sun and the rest will have faded. Oh, you can say that siding does not fade anymore.. There is lots of old siding around, and who can prove that this newer stuff will not look like h... in 30 years? or 10 years?? Anyway, extra money may be involved. If I had money, I would spend it on a full back dormer to enlage the use of the 2nd floor, or a lot of easy care landscaping so I could mow less. Otherwise, I like some of the color ideas.

If you decide to hang window boxes, do not get shallow small ones. Choose fiberglass with some raised panel moldings. I have found the easiest plantings for low maintenance include small boxwood bushes, ivy and impatiens. Again, don't be skimpy with plantings. Fill the boxes for high impact. If the house will be Revere Pewter, I'd do the door (and storm door) in a coral/shrimp color with a larger lantern next to door. I have used Sherwin Williams Roycroft Adobe SW0040 and it's a nice fun pop without being too bright. Very Cute House!

I like shutters, but not in this situation where there is only 1 shutter per window! I like window boxes too, but these may be hard to plant and water if there are shrubs in the way.

Remove the shutters, add window surround and window box. Repeat around front door

I agree with Anita about the siding. You will also have holes in the siding where the shudders mount to it. It's a problem no one thinks or talks about when trying to make small changes to a house. Things tend to snowball into new problems or expenses.

Hi Alexis. I recommend going to:

    https://www.plygem.com

There you can change color of door and house and so much more for free. Then you can print out or save your images and then have something to share with family and friends and get opinions. Far too often people can’t see a vision even when they can come up with a concept. But this site solves all those issues. When you make a decision. Come back and let us know. Hope this helps.

I think he will be much happier with a very high gloss black door. It makes the house look very chic especially with the last photo’s outside house colors. It always looks clean against the white and I also vote for no shutters. Of course the landscape is a must. It drops your heart into the “awwww” stage.

I like no shutters also with window boxes . I think a portico says “welcome”.

    Definitely no shutters!!

I feel that the red color contrasts the white paint of the house too much. A more muted color like grey to match the the roof I think will look great!
