Help, please! My kitchen table needs updating!

last modified: 4 years ago

I have a 1992 golden oak pedestal table (NOT clawfoot) and 6 chairs. In an effort to save money, we're thinking of just updating it by getting it refinished and/or painted. The bid I received to have it refinished is approximately $900 for the table and $170 each for the chairs, which are sturdy and well-made. HOWEVER, I am concerned that after spending $2,000+ on it, it will still have a "country" look to it and will still look dated. Would it work to just have the table restained and buy new chairs, similar to Ethan Allen's Berkshire Side Chairs in black (which the website shows with their Cooper pedestal table)? Or will the table look even more dated? My choices are 1) stain the entire set 2) stain only the table and buy black chairs 3) stain only the TOP of the table and buy black chairs 4) stain only the TOP of the table and have the existing chairs painted black. I know this is long and I appreciate any advice you all can give me. Thank you!

Yes I would try to sell it. Even after staining or painting you can’t change the style of the table

The table doesn’t look dated at all; have it re-stained. The chairs will be dated no matter what color, so buy new.

@emilyam819 Thank you for your comment. What style and color of chair would you buy? Thanks again.

Does the Colonial table and chairs match the style of your kitchen and home? We can't tell from the photo.

I guess you are not DIY people?

@emilyam819 Last question, I promise. I don't quite understand what a Windsor chair is (I googled it). Home design is not a strength of mine. Is this style considered Windsor? https://www.ethanallen.com/en_US/shop-furniture-dining-room-chairs-side-chairs/berkshire-side-chair/226410.html#start=1&sz=99 I really appreciate your help!

I’m not a chair expert, but I consider your current style to be a windsor chair. I like the chair in your link.

@BeverlyFLADeziner No, we are not DIY people. We have a pretty traditional style but not Colonial. Just updated our family room with transitional Smith Bros. furniture. Thank you for the suggestion!

I have a virtually identical table and chairs, and it never occured to me that they are ”outdated.” I still like them.

Please share a snapshot of your family room furniture. To assess, perhaps, how your current dining room table and chairs might be updated to coordinate with it.

I wouldn't spend $900 on the table, but $170 per chair is less than what a new solid chair might cost. (If only lightly sanding to paint, cost may be less?)

My daughter in law kept their table as is, sanded/painted the chairs black, added a distressed rug, new chandelier and updated the art and now the set looks great; how you accessorize is important. I‘d also remove the plant stand, remove one extension, add a centrepiece and could add roman blinds and even paint the door black.

Sell it to me and buy what you like.

I bought a home finished (cabinets, floors, doors, fireplace surround, trim, etc etc) in golden oak. I don’t care if some people think it’s outdated. I’m 67 years old and I like it just fine.

Let me just say refinishing furniture is not rocket science. I paid to have someone professionally redo a table for me once and they did a not so great job at a very high price. i decided to give it a try after that and i’ve done it many times since. You need the proper tools, patience and a good space to do it. watch some videos and read up on it and you could do the table for a fraction of the price you were told.

BTW I believe your chairs are arrow back windsor chairs.

I like your table, but I think $900 is a lot to spend on a table you aren't sure about. Painting it may be cheaper. I’m also not sure if you chose the Ethan Allen chairs because you like them, or because you believe they match the table. I like the Berkshire chairs, and I think they would work with your table, but you have plenty of other options that are less country/farmhouse in style. If it were me I would start by replacing the chairs with some that you really like and accessorizing the room without refinishing the table. Then you have a better idea of the direction you want to go and can either pay for the new finish, or spend your money on a table you truly like.

I would chalk paint the chairs and table legs black. It's very easy to do, and lots of videos on youtube. I'll see if I can find my pictures. Did it years ago.

The Ethan Allen chair you referenced is a modern take on Windsor style, and it would look good with your table, as it is. I’ve had similar with a modern table, and it added a traditional counterpoint to an otherwise modern room. In your room, it will add a modern counterpoint (the color and squared shape) while referencing a traditional style (Windsor). It will look great.

To me, its always going to have a country farmhouse look to it no matter how its painted. The estimate for paint is a huge chunk of buying a new set that IS your updated style. Sell it and buy something that fits into what youre trying to create. good luck

If youre not up for DIY the i would sell it or slip cover your chairs in white cotton duck to break up the wood -

FWIW we wanted a game table for our basement and i found a beat up (but very solid) oak table and chairs on Marketplace for $50 - bought a paint sprayer on amazon and added sheepskin chair pads from Etsy - refinishing with the sprayer took one day (and a few YouTube videos) but the finish is fantastic - and way easier than hand painting all those spindles

It's going to be hard to update the look of your dining table and chairs since each have have very traditional styles and profiles. Paint will certainly help update to a point. Someone suggested selling and buying a new table and chairs. That might be the easiest for you. I didn't realize the cost of refinishing would be so much. Refinishing is not all that hard. Almost anyone can accomplish it with much lowered cost. I might suggest that if you really want to keep your table and chairs you consider painting the table base and the chairs the same color but strip and refinish the table top in it's natural color.

I would consider buying contemporary black chairs and live with the table as is for a while. Your chairs are more 'country' than the table. With fresh chairs you may enjoy the table as it is. It doesn't look too golden on my screen but a chestnut stain would look nice with black. Get another quote. Regarding selling, it's not easy. People on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Next Door, and the like are bargain hunting and won't pay much for your furniture. Maybe you should browse there for chairs or a table. I got a steal of a hefty older Pottery Barn table for $50, in espresso, and I'll be refinishing it myself.

These are two for $266 on Wayfair and have good reviews

Consider having a granite or marble top added. You can go French or contemporary no need to refinish chairs. Good Luck!
