A curious visitor resting on my deck...

I knew they lived under our shed, but I never expected to see this when I went to my deck to check on the cucumbers I have growing in a big pot out there.

I've taken steps to make the cucumbers more secure, and have given up on my 3 deck flower boxes, since he/she ate them. Fortunately, he/she only ate a couple of the outer cucumber leaves. He probably confused our dilapidated deck with something in the woods. ;)

He/She is cute in your photo, but I wouldn’t want he/she in my backyard. 😉

What is it? We have lots of wildlife that visit our garden, but I don't recognize that one!

It's a groundhog, AKA wood chuck, whistle-pig, land beaver, marmot. They are mostly in the eastern half of the US and then up into most of Canada.

That one would be an easy shot.

Your ground hog doesn't look "curious" to me at all. He looks fat and content. And will probably eat anything that you do not want him to eat.

No worries........I'm definitely not going to encourage him/her. He peaked through a hole in the deck yesterday and I ran out and scared him/her. I read that sprinkling ammonia around might discourage him........or maybe fox urine, etc. I have a solar charger with electric fencing around my garden. The warning light was flashing this morning and I rushed to Tractor Supply to buy another battery. So that's up and working again. I learned my lesson awhile back when I think raccoons climbed over the un-electrified fence and ruined a lot of my tomatoes. It's a real pain to have to do so much protecting.......but hey.......we're all hungry, right? :)
