It's a perennial, but, as Christopher said, it's tender and can't take frost.

IMPE, I've never encountered any fragrance. They are perennial here, and some reseed easily too. It's a good butterfly attractor.

I loved using Pentas in gardens on Maui. It was like a constantly blooming small shrub. It even took to hard pruning pretty well when they got too big.
