Wafer Light Size in 7.5 foot ceiling house

Hi, we bought a house with 7.5 ceilings throughout (70s cape) with very minimal overhead lighting.

We are going to put wafer lights throughout and we’re wondering if we should go with 4 or 6 inch diameter.

Also should we just be using the online lighting calculator to determine the amount of lights recommended per room?

    A typical house does not have lights covering the entirety of every single ceiling in every single room. Just because modern technology invented a wafer fixture does not change the basic concepts of providing task, accent, or ambient light. Use the appropriate method of lighting for each space, and if chosen as a fixture wafer lights can contribute to that method.

    Yea agreed. We still plan to have accent and task lights, the house is just too dark at night with no overhead lighting. Look to have that be the main source and supplement with task and accent.

    We agree with the previous commentator. You definitely need to use different light sources. And in order to determine the diameter of the lamps: 4 or 6 inches, it`s needed a photo of the house inside and more details about the interior.

    Hi, thanks for the comment. Some example photos of the kitchen, a bedroom, and living room are attached. Low ceilings (7.5 ft and little to no overhead lighting).

    If you use other light sources, you need 4 inch wafer lights and if you want to use wafer lights as your main light source - you need 6 inch

    So by reading "throughout" and "online calculator per room" that infers that you are just going to put a grid of recessed lights everywhere. No consideration for furniture placement, doors/windows, function, mood or aesthetics. Many choose to do just that and if that is your goal, carry on. Seeing the rooms or ceiling height aren't big factors between choosing 4" vs 6", that choice would pertain to spacing, cost, and aesthetics. And the fact that they are wafers is more about installation method than lighting layout, as they have pros and cons just like any other type of recessed lighting you choose.

    But if a lighting designer were choosing, a grid of lighting would not be the solution everywhere.

    As an example, in the Living Room, That would not fit the seating layout or mood of the space. Instead, a couple accent lights over the fireplace, maybe over a feature wall too, layered with table lamps would be a better choice. And removing the existing center flush mount.

    Another example is the Kitchen/Dining, where the existing chandelier over the table is perfect, no recessed needed. The Kitchen could have recessed to replace the 2 flush mounts and provide task light over the counters and into cabinets, but a general grid does not usually line up with the task functions, that is better to be based on cabinet/counter/island locations.

    For bedrooms, a recessed light in each corner usually creates a hot spot over the bed, attracting attention to a dead nook created by a dresser, or an unbalanced wall wash caused by a window interruption. So without some architectural features, any recessed would be more uncommon.

    Very helpful and totally agree/understand. The intention wasn’t to grid everything, just have the cans provide more light to supplement the other sources.
