Stamped concrete vs stamped overlay

Hi All, Need your expert advise. We have a aggregate patio about 17-18 years old, in good shape but starting to get rough on bare feet. Is it better to just take it out and put a new patio or just do an overlay and get some more years out of it. A new one is about 15K vs overaly is about 4K. I also like the patterns they can do with an overlay vs putting a new stamped patio. Would love to hear on past experience with overlays too. Please help!!

I have never seen a thin topping put on an exposed aggregrate concrete finish (doesn't mean it hasn't been done, I just haven't seen it nor would I ever do it). Probably because I would imagine it would never hold up - the exposed aggregrates are thrown on top of the concrete during finishing, and many pop out over time, so it would not be stable enough to hold a thin topping. Also, if you are in a freeze/thaw climate, thin concrete toppings don't work well.

As far as a stamped topping or complete new stamped slab, either should be performed the same.
