I am not sure I like the black with your other finishes in either shape.

So the counters are the same quartzite you see on the wall. The pull bars are black. Our two sinks are black quartz and gold faucets. We have black pendent lights over the island) and the island is black. We have no upper cabinets. The appliances aside from the refrigerator (I didn’t want a huge chunk of white oak) are panel ready. The monogram has the gold on it as well.

And I should add that this isn’t the entire kitchen. Let me see if I have a pic

Looks great so far and I like the cheaper hood. I don’t think there’s so much of a difference that you’ll remember the expensive one in a year.

Oh wow, if you can do the slab hood, I’d definitely do that. It’s amazing! I like the black ones ok too but think they detract from the beautiful stone. But it’s a personal preference—do you want the hood to be the star or the stone?

get an insert and have a custom hood built around it. I added a walnut band to mine, but you could do you gold if you like.

The issue I had was height. you can only do so much. Those pics you show won't translate to your space. None of those pics will look like that in your kitchen because of your ceiling height.

here's mine. 36" stovetop. My ceiling is tad lower than 8'. This was all I could do

the insert comes out to 19-21" if I remember correctly.

have them build something custom, but keep in mind it won't look like the pictures you have showing 9-10' ceilings!

painted black hood. there are ways to do this so that it looks like metal.

I would not do a black hood with low ceilings, keep your other black accents but make the hood disappear a little bit.

I'm not at all a fan of the hood in your first photo. It's too French Chateau for your kitchen style, which doesn't strike me as a Louis Quatorze McMansion kind of home. I do like the second one. I don't mind the black.

It’s nice to see a kitchen with 8ft ceilings- I’ve been scouring Reddit, Pinterest, Instagram for custom hoods on low ceilings and they are few and far in between and even fewer without a chimney style.

I just went over the quartzite slab box style hood vent wjth my husband and he said he’d prefer doing the custom one. I said well wouldn’t it be cheaper with the slab (he actually installs and cuts these himself as well so we really can do anything). And he said it would be but then he has to figure out how to support the weight (and I thseeink he’s over doing huge structural changes which we have had to do several like taken out raised floors, moved load bearing beams to reconfigure our 1978 home into an open concept). So of course now I want this option the most.

And yes whatever we go with would have to be metal as he is completely against using anything but metal (plywood for example) as the material to make the hood.

I’m unsure if Making the range hood a focal point makes sense. For one, the stove is not centered and looking straight at it, the pendants on our huge island aren’t centered to the range (I’m an event designer so there’s some visual rules I understand). Secondly, it’s not something that you walk into a room and it faces the playroom actually.

So whether or not i get a plain one or a trendier one- it has to be metal and it has to be custom so either way it’s gonna cost a gazillion dollars. In my mind, I better make the gazillion look like a gazillion and not just plain.

Haha no it’s definitely not a McMansion. This is taken from end of island. The island is Going to be painted. And where our makeshift pantry is right now will be a plumbed coffee station.

If I were spending a gigantic chunk of change on a slab backsplash, I would want it to be the focal point. I'd have a very simple shaped hood and painted in a color that blends well with the slab. Showy slab or showy hood - not both, too much competition. Plus, your big island and lights are a big focal point too. Don't want too much competition for the eye.

My problem with the black is similar to @Kendrah’s comment - your stunning backsplash doesn’t call for a black hood. It should blend into the stone. You can’t have several focal points in a kitchen. Everything being “look at me” doesn’t make for a cohesive design. The black island and pendants are an eye catcher. The hood should be closer to the backsplash color with maybe a band of another metal. Not loving the black hood idea - sorry.

I love the slab hoods in kitchens when appropriate to the design.

Yes we are getting all new appliances. But you know everything is taking forever. We have been in a complete gut since January with major structural changes- moving hvac, plumbing, etc. so we have to somewhat try to live here while this is going on.

The slabs will be going in soon so I’ll make sure to update

Also here is another one. My husband said this is an 8ft ceiling. I want to know (design rule) what is different about something like this picture and what I have (im asking to learn, not arguing). Like I mentioned im an event designer so I tend to go wow factor for all things but understand that sometimes less is more.

I would go with the minimal box style. And if you can't put a slab on it maybe make it a metal box and get it powder coated to match the main color in the slab.

In my experience the plainer it is, the more it costs to execute properly.

I am in a long term renovation project myself (8-1/2 years, kitchen gone since about January and not even measured for cabinets yet).

I wanted a plain white minimal hood and it was originally going to be hung below clerestory windows (plan changed it's been so long)

My hood is fabricated from Corian with a metal insert and the Corian part slides onto two heavy duty steel angle irons that are made to support granite countertop overhangs and the vertical part of the bracket is set into the wall framing.
