Tile Help Needed

Hi everyone,
We are planning for major renovations. We will be changing our hardwood throughout, the stairs, and kitchen. We are starting by changing the tiled areas in the entryway and closet, hallway, powder room, and laundry room.
The measurements are as follows:
Entrance - 7x6.5 ft
Closet - 5x2 ft
Hall - 8x3 ft
Powder room - 5x5 ft
Laundry room - 8x6 ft
I would like the same tile in all these areas and it must work with the black entry door, the powder room wall paper, and future lighter wood floors.
What size tile would be best for these areas?

I forgot to mention that the current tile we have is 13x13.

Why are you changing the hardwood?

What is the style of the house? A lot depends on the house style as to what size tile.

I am changing the hardwood because I don't like it. The colour is too red and the planks are too narrow for our taste. The house is contemporary and our new kitchen will reflect that.

Thanks Beverly! Is that a dark tile in 12x24?

@MGdecor I would recommend a 12x24 tile size. Also, for the bathroom it's best to lay down the tiles the long way, where the longer side is set vertically. Visually, a long and narrow direction lengthens a small room and also makes it appear larger.

Beverly has also provided good examples in how to lay down this tile size on those areas.

Hello, do you consider bamboo hardwood as an option?

    ^Love the dark slate look

Hi Max, we will be replacing with white oak in a light stain.

This is the image I found online when looking for front doors. We copied this door exactly.  We plan to be install light wood floors like in the image (though, not on the diagonal). I like the dark tiles,  but I worry it'll be too much for my laundry room.

Alternating black and white tiles in a similar size …with an interesting border around the perimeter…could make a striking but classic entry…the hall ways could be laid out the same tiles but… in diamond shape…effectively making those spaces feel more spacious an open…

Btydrvn, that's exactly what I wanted! But I found it impossible to find square tiles in 13x13 or 12x12. Anything larger looks ridiculous.

Are there any black and white marble design tiles in the size needed? This may be a little less dramatic but a little more elegant…

Most of the sizes I find are 12x24, 24x24, and 24x48. I will have to go to more tile shops!

I think slate look porcelain is a good look that will last. I had it in my laundry room in my old house, and I put in my MB last year.

I think it is hard to understand why tile at all in those spots I would do the same hardwood except for the laundry that would be a much more high end look than the tile in those spots.

Patricia, interesting idea but we live in Canada and our climate dictates that it is best to tile in the entryway to protect from snow and salt damage. But I do see what you mean, it would be continuous flooring without any breaks. If I tile in the entryway and laundry,  should the tile be the same or could it be different?

I live in Canada too and we have a really good mat outside the front door where 90% of the snow is removed and one large rug at the door inside and all our floors the same everywhere . We have had that for 15 yrs no issues .
