SW Ivory Lace??

Hi all! We have a new build with a lot of big windows/natural light/very wooded lot… after testing a lot of whites, Ivory Lace seems like it is the only one that is a mid-range white and isnt reading too yellow/orange or too gray. But it seems like there is very little about it online with reviews and I was hoping someone here has it on their walls and can speak to it! I am planning to do trim the same color as walls but in a different sheen. Possibly ceiling same as well, but possibly will go lighter there with a Westhighland White or Greek Villa. Thanks so much!

To start there is no way to see a color online and make a decision. To see it in someone elses house is useless . Your lighting both natural and artificial have huge effects on wall color , every itme you have in your space affects wall color that is why choosing wall color should be the last choice you make . I know builders like to paint before flooring install so you need to wait until your lighting is in for sure before choosing any white .

    Sherwin Williams Ivory Lace ( SW 7013 ) is a warm creamy-white that has slight yellow undertones.Jul 19, 2019

Paint your walls SW Ivory Lace and write a bunch of reviews about it on line. Don't let the tail wag the dog.

Thanks all! im totally fine with not using a ”popular” color but I am a nerd when it comes to reading about undertones… and just very little info out there from paint experts on this color. Hoping someone has used it and can share their experience. good to know about the lighting though!! i will probably ask if we can prime only before lights. thank you!!

Yes i definitely plan to do that. Thanks Mark!

Paint colors don't inherently have undertones.

The paint color reviews online are just people's subjective opinion.

If you ask them WHY a color has a yellow "undertone" for example, they can't tell you why or under what light source it looks yellow.

Because it's just what they think.

    Or what they read.

    Or made up.

Or copied and pasted from another blogger's "paint color review".

A color review that someone very likely completely made up for the sake of writing content.

    For Google.

    Not people.

Entirely possible the reason why there aren't color reviews for Ivory Lace is because it doesn't rank high enough in keywords for Google.

Lori that is so interesting to hear. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I know you have a great deal of expertise when it comes to this topic! I will be sampling it in multiple places and see how it goes.

I love lime green. It is one of my absolute favorite colors. That does not mean that it looks good in my home.

Picking a white or a neutral wall color isn't as much about finding a white or a neutral that you love as it is finding a white or neutral that you love with your cabinets, flooring, countertops, backsplash, furnishings, art and décor, your fireplace . . .

If I am just looking at paint colors I love SW Creamy (not a lot different than Ivory Lace, Ivory lace is just a tiny bit more neutral, making it a tiny bit more pink less yellow than Creamy and a tiny bit darker than Creamy).

Just because I love Creamy will not make it look good next to pink brick (Fireplace) and purple red and green slate (flooring).

Even with the slightly lower chroma, Ivory Lace was still far too yellow with my brick and slate. The color that looked neutral and beautiful on my walls was BM Frosted Toffee - described as a rosy neutral.

This is what it looks like in my home. You can only imagine how yellow/green Creamy would have looked.

Ivory Lace is a beautiful wall color, but there is almost no limits to wall colors you can choose, but far fewer choices in flooring, countertops and upholstered furniture.

When coming up with a whole home color palette I like to start with the colors you love. The accent colors that are in the art and décor items that you couldn't walk past while shopping and had to buy and bring home.

Most of my art has shades of purple, red and teal. These are my signature colors, the colors that make my heart sing. (I even bought a purple gardening bench that you can see in the photo of my foyer.) (Used it to kneel on while painting the baseboards.) Taupe is the best neutral with the colors I love. (Taupe is the color somewhere between pink beige and violet gray.)

My sister loves fall colors and most of her art and décor is green with touches of dark orange and golds. Greige is the best neutral with the colors my sister loves. (Greige is the color somewhere between a green beige and green gray.)

My sister in law loves cornflower blue and peach and yellow. Cream is the perfect neutral backdrop for her art and décor.

Once you have identified the colors you love you can pick the neutral color family/families that will work well with your colors. Pick your flooring and cabinets and countertops based on how they work with the colors you love. After those items are chosen find the white that will work best with all these items. If you are painting your cabinets white, pick everything else first and then pick the white for your cabinets and trim. I like to use one white for all trim, painted doors . . throughout the house.

Raegrif37-/ thanks so much for your post! I currently have samples of Ivory Lace, Creamy, and Shoji White up in my bedroom. I am really loving the Ivory Lace and like that it’s a little darker than Creamy. At certain times of the day Creamy looks white-white and I really want something soft.

I’ve also done tons of research and like what I see about Ivory Lace , though wish there was more. Did you read the post by Sarah Jane Cristy? She’s a huge advocate for Ivory Lace and also Pearly White. ( pearly white is too gray in my North facing bedroom)

Here’s the link in case you haven’t seen it:

H D YES! My original plan was Shoji white all over, but it looked way too dark and gray in our rooms. I was bummed because it is so warm and pretty. Creamy is looking pretty orangey/yellowy compared to Ivory Lace but it was one of my tops too!. It sounds like we are looking at all the same colors!:) Yes, I have seen this blog post but thank you for sending it to me!! Good luck and let me know what you go with!

Yes Shoji White is showing some off tones at times for me too! I’m leaning towards Ivory Lace and will definitely keep you posted. I have one month to decide, lol 😂. I would love to know what you decide too!

Have you chosen a paint and painted yet?

Amber I have chosen one but haven’t painted! Ivory Lace looked too pink next to some of our grayish marble color tile so we selected BM Soft Chamois instead. I hope it all turns out ok!!

We haven’t painted yet, leaning towards Ivory Lace. Would love to see photos with Soft Chamois , Creamy and/or Greek Villa once available.

@H D I have a samplize on the way of Ivory Lace and also have one of Greek Villa and Creamy. Our lighting won't be the same as yours, but I can snap a photo of the three to share. I believe it was you who saw Lori's comment on post. I've pretty much decided on Greek Villa, as I feel it looks the best with the floor, cabinet colors and tile we picked out. Still have to pick out counters, but I think Greek Villa will be easier for us to pair with the style of stone we are preferring :)

Amber, thanks—I would love to see a photo of the three colors of convenient for you!

Sure, when Ivory Lace arrives, I’ll get a photo :)

    TY :)

We are using Greek Villa on ceilings with soft chamois on walls and trim. Ill for sure send pics to this thread once finally painted!!

    TY!

Bottom, left to right: Greek Villa, Creamy

Amber, thanks very much! They all look so nice!

I’ll be interested if you see any odd undertones in any of those three colors.

HD, they are! I definitely recommend getting a sample(ize) of the colors your considering to see how they will work for your home. Some things make creamy look more yellow and ivory lace pink.

Too bad Ralph Lauren isn't making/selling paint anymore. I used the Loft White in a north facing bedroom. I loved it.

Benjamin Moore's Floral White is similar to RL's Studio White.

Would love to see how it looks.. you mentioned doing the ceiling and trim the same color? I love that look.. I’m “this close” to pulling the trigger with Ivory Lace in my open floor plan home.. we get a lot of light, so I think it’ll come off as a pretty off white. But I might want to do the trim in a white because I have white windows, and I like the little bit of contrast… any ideas on trim? Would Extra White work? Pure white seems too similar and I’ve only heard bad things about high reflective white.. (doesn’t cover well)

Oh shoot, just saw that you didn’t choose ivory lace.. Chamois is so pretty too.. I don’t have a stitch of gray in my house so maybe that’s why ivory lace works .. now I just need actually put it on the wall and stop staring at the samalize lol

Hi! Don’t know if you’ve seen this article. She recommends Pure White for trim with Ivory Lace. I’m 95% going with Ivory Lace for 2 bedrooms, but at this rate won’t be until after the holidays.

    https://sarahjanechristy.com/farmhouse-sherwin-williams-white-paint-colors/

I really like Ivory Lace on the walls with trim done in Ivory Lace, but at a higher gloss level. That is usually enough difference. If you want greater contrast I would test Whitetail and Greek Villa. Pure White, Extra White are too cool, Alabaster too yellow (touch of green next to Ivory Lace).

Raegrif—have you decided yet? I am still unsure about using Ivory Lace for a bedroom. SW has updated their website and this is how they now describe it:

This bright, creamy white with its cool pink undertone imparts a delicate grace to any space. Perfect in bedrooms when paired with a darker neutral.”

Was surprised to read about the cool pink undertone since this is not showing up in my sample. Seeing more yellow than anything.

@H D yes we chose a Benjamin Moore color that has a very similar LRV and tone, but reads less pink… surprisingly the Ivory Lace read pink next to our white and grayish bathroom tile. The color we chose is Soft Chamois and seems to be the perfect cream!

Thank you for your reply! Might need to check out Soft Chamois myself!

Thank you everyone, I am going to get a Samplize of SW Ivory Lace SW 7013 from this discussion.

I painted my family room/kitchen SW Ivory Lace. Just thought I would add this photo for reference for people considering it. My trim is BM White Cloud. There is very little contrast between them, less in direct sunlight as you can see from the different angle of these photos, so a "whiter" trim probably would have been better but we just matched what was already there. I also made the mistake of not painting my ceiling which is currently a bright white. It's all a mismatched mess but that's what I like.

Julie PH this kitchen is just a gorgeous space. What color are those cabinets? They are beautiful.

The closest match is Sherwin Williams white flour. It is a very strange color. Sometimes peach, sometimes bright white. Here’s what I’ve deduced: white flour shines in dark spaces without natural light. With natural light, it becomes orange-pink-peach. So I love it when my kitchen is lighted during a cloudy stormy day and at night. But when I don’t need the lights on in daylight and that south and west sun shines on my kitchen, it is so peachy and that faint blue-white ceiling makes it even peachier. I’ve learned so much about whites since I started this whole process! I still haven’t painted the trim and doors in the rest of my house as I really need to because white flour isn’t quite neutral enough for me (too colorful) but I can’t find something that would go with it.

Some options. Bit of Sugar from BEHR is pretty.

The funny thing is that after a while, all these concerns go away and you can't even remember which color you chose. That happened to me in our vacation home. We picked one white for the entire house, walls and trim alike. We needed to paint something recently and for the life of me I couldn't remember what that white was. And the color we eventually selected for the re-paint works just fine.

If I were looking for a white trim for with White Flour I might ask the store to start with the formula for White Flour and adjust the colorant levels.

You have to be savvy with whites because you don't want them to decrease the amount of white colorant they are adding, just the colors. When they reduce the white it throws everything else off.

As a second option I would look at SWW Cheviot. I am looking at the combination on my whiteboard right now and it is quite pretty.

Per Easy RGB the LCH values of the two colors are very similar, with Cheviot being slightly less colorful and slightly lighter. SW and my eyes find a greater value change in the LRV/L values than Easy RGB.

I despise the way colors get mutilated by the internet, but this is a picture of my whiteboard,

White flour is the 2nd sample from the left and Cheviot is the next sample.

What I am seeing is a lighter, more subdued color that is similar in hue.

I added Snowbound to the mix.

What the numbers tell us is that it is darker and less chromatic (colorful) than White Flour.

What the numbers don't tell us and you may not see looking at the photo that has been color corrected by my phone and my computer and houzz's server is that Snowbound has passed the threshold for it's hue and moved to a lilac undertone. Looking at these colors together under artist grade daylight lighting reminds me of an Easter parade with the peach and lilac tones.

I always recommend that people take their samples of whites outside on a clear day around 2:00 in the afternoon and look at them under natural daylight. All the pinks and purples and peach, yellow or green undertones come out to play.

Updating my contribution to this thread. We went with Greek Villa for ceiling, trim and walls just in differing sheens. It has been two years and I am still so pleased with how it all came together! No yellow. Perfectly warm in and creamy. We are surrounded by woods, so it does go green in one of our north facing bedrooms, which only has a north facing window, but only when the lights are off. Photo pictured is in a south facing room.
