Strange September weather for SoCA

After a terribly hot spell in late August-early September, we ended up with a series of very hot humid days, culminating with hurricane Kay's flirting off the coast. She brought gusty winds followed by strangely gray misty days but still very warm. The air was like a wet sponge but the sky didn't open up, just sputter and spit. Our temperature low last night hovered around 85°F, something almost unheard of for CA. There were a few brief showers tonight which was much welcomed. We were under 3 warnings/watches all at once today: excessive heat, high winds and flash floods! What a roller coaster.

I surely agree with the sputter and spit. Heard no rain overnight and just over 1/8 in the gauge.

Even drop helps but was hoping for more since forecast was for 4/10.

It's 70 at 530am and of course humid. With the Route fire burn scar nearby and damage to the 5 freeway I guess we didn't need much.

Two of my facinations are Earthquakes and Hurricanes, and I have govt. apps for each. So... I've been watching these for going on 20+ years. One thing I've noticed, that the warmer the Pacific Ocean is the higher north the hurricanes go. They usually trail off toward Hawaii, but not this year. The warm water is allowing the hurricanes to travel more north, and, I suppose, this latest heat dome has kept the two latest close to the Baja... and on up. This latest, Kay, went all the way to the top before becoming a still-powerful tropical storm, bringing all that swirling air, winds and rain to SoCA.

I only got a sprinkle this morning, but I'll still take the cooler air.

My rain gauge showed that we picked up 0.25 inch from the "big storm" Friday night as a few brief showers came through. Saturday morning looked promising of rain but the clouds only appeared menacing, then petered out in the actual delivery. The clouds kept us overcast the whole day Saturday but except for an occasional sprinkling, Kay didn't live up to its designation as a "storm". The temperature is cooler today but it felt sticky with the high humidity. The bugs are hosting their big get-together festivities in the evening air buzzing defiantly. At times I was convinced we've moved to Louisiana.

"At times I was convinced we've moved to Louisiana."

I know what you mean! The heat wasn't so strange but we're not used to the humidity. This is the hardest time of year for me here in SoCal. It can stay warm/hot through October when I long for cool Fall weather. However, I wouldn't trade our winters for anything!

I agree with chloebud. I've lived thru' too many horribly cold, deep-snow winters in the various places we've lived. I hope I never have to shovel snow again! I have a heavy winter coat, hat, gloves and Uggs but that is to wear to my GS's Hockey games. That's as cold as I ever want to get.
