Paint the ceiling white with a touch of light blue. Subconsciously and subtly it feels more like outdoors. Light color on the walls too. Can you add a sun tube or skylight in the hall to add more natural light?

Any vertical stripes will make a room look taller...try curtain panels that start from the ceiling down. A mirror in the hallway will also make the space feel larger. It's 's all about illusion ;)

A few ideas are....paint the trim (crown and base boards) the same color as the wall, place wall decor with vertical height intended. Another option is to use a color on the ceiling to draw the eye up...good luck! :)

Notice the above pic where the picture placement is on the right against that back wall...it's almost to the ceiling! Also the vertical stacked pair on the left help (and the tall plant)...it's all about illusion, like cynthiav32 said above....

Go high with the curtain rod, like the above pic, and maybe incorporate vertical painted lines on an accent wall...good luck!! :)
