We purchased a 40-year-old coastal craftsman-style cottage on the intercoastal waterway that is in need of a lot of love. The builder used cypress wood (mostly rough-hewn) from his Carolina farm in the interior. The exposed ceiling beams are rough-hewn and untreated, and very stained, likely from tar and nicotine from the folks that had the house for the 36 years until we found her last year. We have sanded the cypress we are keeping for board and batten and the original cypress color is beautiful. Does anyone know how I can clean the rough-hewn cypress beams. We really want to keep the rough-hewn (as opposed to sanding it) and treat it after it is clean and closer to the original color. Thanks!
