The door appears to complement the finish on the media cabinet. Also wood finish is so much more forgiving when it comes to abuse. Painted doors just chip.

Maybe door wall should be painted darker. The blue you showed for the door? Not a pro.

If it were mine I would paint the door the same color as the wall so that the door blends into the wall. If the leaded glass continues to annoy you, I would cover it with shade as previously recommended. I have painted many doors & they have not chipped

Your first objection is the leaded glass and then your suggestion was to paint the door. How exactly does that solve your problem of the glass insert? I agree with the above comment that the wood compliments the console under the tv, I wouldn’t paint it. You’ve done a fine job with the space you have. The only thing I would change (when $$ allow) is switching the love seat with two small scale swivel chairs facing the sofa. That way the people sitting there can have a conversation or swing around to watch the tv. I find the love seat too large & obstructive, perhaps you can move it to another room.

The door color is fine, it's the 3 different finishes on the door wall that are disjointed. As Tozmo suggests if you can paint the backboard of the coat rack and maybe even the fronts of the other item (shoe cupboard?) to match the wall, it would reduce some of the visual clutter. If the surface of the glass is smooth, you might be able to affix some window film to minimize the leaded glass look and still have the light come through.

I’d suggest a Roman shade, or other roll up shade before painting. Tozmo’s suggestion of sheer panels could also work. I use a temporary adjustable shade on a similar door in my rental home, but you could affix something more permanent.

You have too many wood finishes right next to each other. The door and the console cabinet look good together. Change the coat rack and shoe cabinet. Do not put fabric over the leaded glass - that is too traditional for your home.

I'm in the wall-color camp. The match to the console is a red herring -- you can't have everything be a feature or there's just chaos. Some things need to melt away.

I have to agree about that blue rug. really isn't the best choice w/your decor.

check out the loloi rugs on wayfair, or the ChrislovesJulia. They have some inexpensive options

(personally I think that wall that has the bags and coats is very distracting to the room. Perhaps you could find something that is enclosed to put on that wall?

I agree with Beverly - your rug is the biggest culprit. The blue in the rug is a bit jarring and does not fit with anything else, even in your photo of the room that does not show the dark wall. Fairly easy fix!

It would be cheaper to replace the leaded glass with a frosted one than some of the other suggestions that have been made. The door is fine; I think the coat wall is the issue. Paint could solve that.

I always find it interesting the variety of opinions I see on houzz. Just goes to show there's no one right answer. After reading through all these posts; replacing the door glass sounds like less hassle than it did originally. I think I will start there.

I agree there is a lot going on with the coat wall. The shoe cabinet is an IKEA cabinet/ Oak pole wrap diy. It replaced a bench with cubbies and I'm not going back there for reasons I won't bore you with. I did consider painting it to match the wall but thought I'd let it settle for a while and then decide. Painting the oak parts to match the wall would be simple though. I'm less convinced about painting the coat hook backer (the hooks themselves are still heavy black iron) but maybe I will look for a whole new replacement.

I guess the door will stay the same color. I do like the idea of painting it to match the wall but I'd hesitate to do so as my dog scratches it up. It would look crummy pretty quickly.

I did have the idea of a plant along the TV wall and am trying to decide between a large plant that sits on the floor (in dog range - that concerns me) and smaller wall-hung planters.

I like my rug. It was the most agonizing decision I made and I'm pretty happy with it. I have zero interest in replacing it with something black and white or neutral but I can guarantee you if I did; someone on here would suggest I needed a colorful rug ;) Thanks for all the ideas everyone!
