Depends on from where the water and suds were leaking. If the drain standpipe behind the machine is overflowing, then that's a clogged drain line and calling a plumber is the right choice. If elsewhere from the machine (dispenser drawer, door seal, somewhere inside or beneath the machine) then call for appliance repair. You say there's water remaining in the tub and it won't drain (presumably you've tried setting it to a Spin Only cycle?), then that's also appliance repair.

Check for a blockage at the drain in the tub. Cure that. It's unlikely two things have failed at the same time. Plus, you can do that yourself. No need to move the machine.

dados is right. The easiest thing is to determine if it is over flowing the drain pipe. That would, obviously be a plumbing issue and probably pretty resolvable. That would probalby mean that your floor is wet unless you were lucky enough to have some safeguard that prevented that.

It not that, then you have an appliance issue.

I once had this kind of probem with a machine and eventually found a footie sock had somehow founds its way into the drain hose or filter, or, whatever. I am old and I dont think that I have ever had this happen before, but it did. The machine simply would not drain.

You might take a look at the most obvious places in your machine to see if you see anything. If it is in between where it goes in and where it comes out, it is an appliance issue.

Otherwise, go search your make and model on YouTube. Even if you cant fix it, it may give you a better idea of what the problem is, so you know you are not being fleeced when that white van full of tools pulls up and you start the clock on their bill.

Yes, the foam is coming out of the dispenser drawer and from the door itself. I’ ve tried the spin (only) cycle a few times, but it still won’t drain.

If this means it’s the machine problem, maybe I should just get a new one, since it’s getting rather old. The repair company calendar’s first appointment shows 11/29. I can’t live that long without a washing machine!

Your choice, of course, whether to buy a new machine ... but replacing the drain pump or clearing a clogged tub hose is a reasonably simple procedure. You may also find that there are limited choices on new washers nowadays due to continued supply issues. Best of luck and success on solving the problem!

Dan, how can I see if theres a blockage at the ”drain pipe”? i cannot see any drainage ports. All I can see is water under the drum by looking through the holes.

If I remember correctly, LG front loaders have a compartment on the lower front panel of the machine to access the drain trap (I'm not recalling the exact name). Once you take the panel off, unscrew the drain trap. Find a shallow pan with a rim and put that under the port to catch water that may spill out. This part of the machine is designed to catch small items that got past the drain holes in the drum. Clean that out and then run a rinse and spin cycle. See if your machine will now drain. You may find some odd items in there. Hope that solves your issue.

Ok, I found a little compartment at the bottom left of the machine (see pix). I pulled out the hose from one of the compartments, removed its cap, and nothing came out. Then I turned the other thing and removed a filter and a little water came out. There was no big item blocking water from flowing through the filter.

I cannot get behind the machine to look for anything back there, it’s too tight and I can’t pull the washer out myself. But there is not water flooding the floor, at least not coming out to the front.

Does this sound like a plumbing issue, i.e., clogged drain hose? I have a dog, and it would not surprise me if there was an accumulation of dog hair somewhere. But it’s not in the pump filter.

Ok, that's what you are looking for. If you unscrewed that and no debris can out, then it could be your plumbing, or it could that the machine is having pump issues. If you have a repair person it could be a quick fix, but it still doesn't address whether you have plumbing problems. If it was me, assuming the rest of the plumbing in the house seemed to operating as normal, I would call a repair tech. But at ten years old, I might instead shop around for another LG. I've had washers in years past where you repair the problem, then problem #2 shows up a couple of months later, and so on.

Do you have a handy man who could come by and run a snake down the stand pipe? Sometimes a wad of lint or pet hair can get stuck in the pipe.

I can see why you are going back and forth on what to do. Wish I could have helped more. But now you know where the trap thingie is, so that's good for the future.

"foam is coming out of the dispenser drawer and from the door itself ... " Sounds like it might possibly be an accidental overdose of detergent. The tech term is "suds lock." Your machine's user guide may have instructions on what to do - assuming you have it handy or can find a copy on-line.

This being a Sunday and it being unlikely for you to get anybody to come out today, here's another suggestion for something you can try on your own. This comes from helping a neighbor with an older LG FL machine a couple of years ago. (Also happened on a weekend when techs were not working and she also was unable to find the user guide.)

What worked for her front load LG was unplugging the machine for a couple of minutes to reset/reboot the electronics. (If you cannot reach the power-cord., how about the circuit breaker for the washer outlet? Can you can turn that off for a couple of minutes?) When we powered up the machine, we were able to run a spin and drain cycle.

If it is new enough to have a display it should display an error code when you reset/reboot the machine. Common problem when LG's won't drain is the drum position sensor (error code LE).

I don't see an error code although the manual indicates them. I did not "reboot" and don't know how to.

Stick a garden hose down the drain on full blast and wait a few minutes. That'll tell you whom to call.

I would NOT put a garden hose full blast into a washer drain. What a disaster that could be. Get a plumber out to verify there is not a plumbing issue; then you can decide whether it makes sense or not to repair a 10 year old machine or purchase a new one. In the meantime I would recommend you ask a neighbor or friend if you can do your laundry there until you get this resolved.

Update: fingers crossed, but it‘s working again. I YouTubed, reset, read the manual, etc., etc., etc. This morning I ran a rinse and spin cycle, and it drained. Then I ran a tiny load with a minute amount of detergent. So far, so good. I am afraid to do a larger load, so will take baby steps.

Thanks for the advice! It’s much appreciated. At least now I know that it can drain, and it appears that new machine availability is immediate (next day delivery) if something occurs again.

(BTW, from the serial number, I determined that my machine was manufactured 15 years ago. Not a bad lifespan!)

• What is the model number of the LG washer?
• When you opened the drain hose, did you tilt it downward as shown in this videoto empty the tub?
• After emptying the drain hose, how much water remains in the washer? Can you touch water in the tub?
• If there is still a substantial amount of water in the tub, did you try removing the drain hose from the standpipe, placing it in a bucket*, and seeing if you can drain the machine?
• I believe you can drain the machine (only) by selecting "no spin" with the spin cycle.
• Did you try a Tub Clean to clean any detergent and residue from the machine?

*The bucket should be placed at least 24" above the floor
