Masonite or MDF on textured walls

Hi there. What do you think. Is masonite or MDF better to smooth out a textured wall? I did learn about skim coating to remove the texture and honestly, the dust is my issue. I think a smooth wall vs a textured wall for board/batten is a nicer look. Attached are my inspiration photos along with my "before" fireplace wall. Definitely will post "after" once all is said and done. Well, that is if I get the courage to tackle this project. Thanks Houzz community.
