Have you tried something as simple as saddle soap? I think it can be restored, but you can't simply apply a new finish on leather that is dirty. That's why I asked about the saddle soap

Yes I tried saddle soap and it darkened the sofa arm. But I agree with you that it sounds as if it should work! I bought leather cleaner too....screwed up the "finish"....obviously, I made everything worse! I just read (who knows if it is true) that you should never use soap on aniline leather. Guess I believe that now!

I think I am leaning towards Patricia's solution. I will look into having the seat cushions reupholstered (leather) and having arm covers made (which, I am surprised did not come with the sofa when I purchased it)....and of course, have the feathers refilled. Might be the least painful solution. And I just meant the leather is not "top grain" ....Supposedly the Full-grain leather is thicker and more durable than top-grain leather, though it can stain more easily and show stains more visibly (AND it sure STAINS easily)

I clean mine with a neutral dish detergent like ivory, rinse, dry and use Leather Honey leather conditioner.
