I would do green soapstone and please do not hone stone this is when you get grease marks that are unsightly . Make sure your lighting is all LED 4000K then you can go dark for counters . Please do not do fake plastic counters ever .The next time you have another question about this space just add it here then you have a way to look at all the answers with one post.

Black looks great, it's classic, but shows every fingerprint. Would you consider stailess counters? Or cpper?

When I was shopping stones, I saw some BEAUTIFUL leathered Uba Tuba slabs. I seriously considered altering my kitchen plans to use the uba tuba.

I have polished Uba Tuba from 10-15 years ago (previous owners of my house installed it). I like it, but it is not considered to be fashionable right now if that matters.

Virginia Mist is a granite that looks like soapstone (dark grey with white veining) but is easier to care for. Just an FYI- Costa Esmeralda might be hard to find, as are all green granites. It would be stunning with your cabinets and floors.

Have you considered green soapstone? Has a warm feel but it’s not as dark as the traditional gray (which I also think would be gorgeous).

I love cherry and soapstone so much I chose it in my own kitchen.

I have had honed soapstone for 20 years and love it- just like the boned marble in my kitchen it develops a gorgeous patina over time.

I am echoing the suggestions for Virginia Mist granite (aka Jet Mist granite). The look of soapstone is gorgeous, but soapstone varieties vary greatly as to hardness/softness so you have to shop carefully for soapstone, and also you have to have a fabricator very familiar with how to cut and finish the soapstone. Some locales do not have fabricators familiar with soapstone so they do not fabricate it correctly (we have seen reports of this on this forum). Meanwhile, Virginia Mist is a more straightforward purchase with consistent hardness and density among all its slabs.

Where you will see variations in Virginia Mist is in how much of the white swirliness it has. Some slabs have less and some have more, and this is personal preference which you like better. If you decide on this granite, go to several stoneyards to pick the slab you like. It should have a honed finish.

My only caution for soapstone or Virginia Mist is as mentioned above - and is for all dark counters - you need good lighting.

I have natural cherry cabinets in my kitchen. I have Green granite counters and backsplash. The room gets a lot of light from three large windows over my sink area. I love the green granite. It brings the outdoors inside on our wooded lot. The suggested soapstone in green would be beautiful, too. BTW: My kitchen is over 20 years old. And seems timeless to me. But then, I still love it!

Patricia Colwell Consulting, i don't understand the logic of suggesting posters consolidate their questions in one post. It seems it would cause less responses as those offering advice would not know what the subsequent questions are about or even that they exist. It's not the way that things have ever been done on this forum in the past. Am I missing something or would this strategy only be useful for a select few responders and, actually, limit the amount and variety of feedback a poster receives?

Take one door off and carry it in your car as you go stone shopping. It definitely helps to see your cabinet color next to the slabs.

I have honed jet mist after finding out how soapstone varies in hardness, so very difficult to pick soapstone. The honed jet mist has worked very well and doesn’t show the marks that a dark polished granite would.

I originally wanted soapstone but it wasn't in the budget. I ended up selecting honed Negresco (aka Nero Mist) for my perimeter countertops and love it with my stained maple cabinets.

What input do you want? I'm sure the counters you suggest would look great, as would light counters. Get what you like! :)

I had natural cherry and unoiled soapstone perimeter and granite island in my last home. 15 years and it all looked great. We are doing our new kitchen walnut and soapstone. If you like the look of soapstone, you can also consider a granite that is marketed as American soapstone. Its granite but looks similar to gray soapstone with veining.

Soap stone And yes, a high five to comment above. American Soapstone is almost impossible ( naked eye) to discern from black soapstone. But it IS granite and it is very lovely : ) VERY. Beautiful . Easy carefree. Equally lovely with oak.
