Entryway rug dilemma!

Hi, I would love your thoughts on what to do with rugs in our entryway. We recently moved and i can’t figure out what size rugs would work best. We’re going to put hooks above the bench. we live in the midwest so lots of snow/slush will be brought in through the winter.

I would do a really heavy-duty weatherproof large mat in front of the door and an area rug on the other part.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the snowy midwest and it was nice to have a waterproof mat to step in on, then a nice rug to walk on in socks after removing boots. :)

I have a Waterhog mat at my front door which is where all guests come in. They come in a lot of different sizes and colors. I got mine from LL Bean, but I think there are other sources. They are not elegant, but they can't be beat for coping with bad weather conditions. I also put one on the floor of my front hall closet so if you take off your shoes or boots and put them in the closet the wood floor isn't damaged. Ruggables are also popular with people on Houzz. They are machine washable. For me, sometimes practical considerations beat other concerns. If you have a back door which will get the brunt of the bad weather conditions then you could do something that is more elegant at your front door. You have an awkwardly configured entry, but maybe a 5 X 8 would work. I can't tell whether the door opens clearing the stairs or not.

I used to live in Chicago and waterhog mats are fantastic for slushy boots. Some of the colors and patterns are really not aesthetically pleasing but I liked the tan one with a diamond pattern and found it more attractive than others. You can hose them down outside.

Check if your door will clear a rug when you try to open it. The base of my front door is really close to the floor and won't clear the thin hand-knotted silk area rug I have. We live in FL so winter weather is not an issue and I have room to move the rug just beyond were the door swings open. We have a door mat outside to catch any dirt on shoes.
