How to fix this hood trim

last modified: 3 years ago

Yesterday was our contractor's final day at the house, and I'm not loving the way they finished the hood. They cut down a stainless collar to fill the gap between the hood and the ceiling. At the top of the trim piece, the edge is jagged, and there is dark goop at the edge (and on the ceiling). I don't want to call them back for such a small problem. I'll fix it myself when I get past holiday insanity.

My repair plan is as follows:

  • Clean up the black goop (cutting oil?) with a Dawn/hot water solution and Qtips.
  • Sand the really jagged parts down with 400 grit sandpaper.
  • Caulk the gap between the trim and the ceiling.
  • Prime and paint that ceiling area.

Any flaws in that plan? I'm very nervous about sanding the stainless and turning a small problem into a bigger one.
