At this point shiplap is a dying trend, but it will always be appropriate in waterfront properties. Context is important. If you were to do shiplap the marble and wood surround you have wouldn't fit. You don't necessarily need to cover the whole wall surface. Start by finding another place for the TV as others have suggested and then replace the marble with something else and install a mantel. There are literally millions of pictures on Houzz you can look at to find examples of things you like better than what you have.

Are you able to move the TV to another wall? It looks like the TV is up too high to work well where it currently is.

I cant imagine wanting to accent a wall that's small for the room, has odd angles, and is dominated by a TV that comes almost to the ceiling. It's the rare room that's improved by an accent wall. You've had good advice about moving the TV and modernizing the fireplace surround, both of which will actually enhance the space.

Agree that the TV is too large- and never should a cord be hanging. Look at a different room color- that color doesn’t look like it goes well with your carpet or fireplace. Take away your kiddy gates and get a screen that is fitted to your fireplace and has glass doors.

I think it would be pointless to mention the real bear in the room again. I would say paint this room and get rid of the yellow undertone, move the TV and add drapes to the windows. the FP is nice its just not complimented well.

I love accent walls! you need a focal point that stands out in a room, its like wearing a dress and the one thing your looking for to top it off, is a beautiful neckless, that neckless brings the beauty of

that dress out even more.

Definately remove the TV from this wall, remove the arched marble and replace it with a mantle. The fence in front of the fireplace should also be replaced with a normal fireplace screen or insert.

If you keep a TV above the fireplace, I suggest doing nothing other than painting the fireplace wall; and paint it the same colour as the rest of the room. If you are able to move the TV, I suggest hanging a piece of art on the wall. Because of the shape of the room and the size of the fireplace, that wall is already a focal point. Nothing more needs to be done to draw ones attention to it.

didn't see the updated pics of full room, but no doubt MOVE THE TV. Can it go over the table to the left of the Christmas tree. I would paint the wall of the fireplace (not too dark) and put either a nice picture that complements it or a large mirror in a frame. If you insist on the TV over the fire place get one of the new ones that is art until it is turned on AND install correctly (straight and no cord hanging).

I agree with the previous comments. Move the tv to a bigger wall, perhaps the one to the left of the fireplace. New mantle and surround for the fireplace, and get rid of the gates in front of the fireplace. No shiplap! It is overdone and on the way out.

I agree with removing the TV above the fp. It appears in the photo that the angles and openness of the fp wall may not stand out, as you imagine, as a focal point if painted of a contrasting color. Once the TV is off that wall, then you can assess better what to do with the wall and fp surround. Large scale artwork may be all you need/want.

Why do builders put in a corner fireplace, must be cheaper, my pet peeve. To my amateur eye, the scale is way off with the arch over the surround and the huge tv on a small wall. The Christmas tree makes it look unbalanced to me, too short a tree? The loveliest accessory is the dog napping on the rug. I am in agreement, move the tv and rearrange the furniture if need be. A proper screen on the fireplace, one that prevents kids and dog from getting into the fire grate and lastly, get rid of the arch, make it smaller or square it off. do not make the fireplace wall the focal point.

I think you should just move the television to a different position. You could paint the wall grey to keep it calm and casual. You could even paint it a bright white, might be harder to keep clean

Leave the TV if you want to. There are mounts that pull it down if you find it too high. i would do white shiplap. it would look lov.

I like the idea of the television over the fireplace. I do think you should have the television professionally hung so that it is centered over the fireplace and centered for the wall as well. In this picture it looks like it could fall at any second. I would also paint that particular wall a dark charcoal leaving the other walls as they are. For the fireplace surround, please remove that pet gate. Leave the plant where it is and with Christmas over, the console table can be moved close to where the fireplace wall starts (Six to eight inches away from it looks ideal). It doesn't appear you use the fireplace so place either get some of the fake wood from Hobby Lobby or place large pillar candles of differing heights inside of the fireplace. If you put either on a stand or grate it would enhance the look of the fireplace. Add greenery like fig leaves or olive branches with leaves to the surround. I would use that to detract from the large center piece of the surround that sticks out at the top. This would be a cost saver but if you have a large budget I would get an estimate on removal of the entire surround and replacing it with just a 10" wide mantel in honey or walnut tone to go with the dark wall. To bring the dark wall into play with the rest of the room put some darker items on the console, use some floor pillows with colors that blend the light and dark, and I would place one larger picture with a very simple design over the console. If you have room for it next to that window on the side that we cannot see add maybe a sister picture to the one over the console. I would also consider larger blinds, maybe 3 inch slats and use of a floor pillow beneath the window next to the fireplace.

i believe you have made the fireplace your focus in this room, which is a good idea. its just not a pretty fireplace and the tv is dominating. its hard to say if this is possible, but bring in a good carpenter and see if a built-in could be made around the fireplace, removing the arch and marble and including a nice mantle. or call a mason and see if a veneer stone face ( with a mantle) can be added. also move the tv!

Move that TV to the wall on the left. Put a mirror or artwork above the fireplace. I can't tell what your seating is, but consiter a couch or two in an "L" shaped to enjoy the TV and fireplace. Good Luck

Another idea, if you keep the TV there, is to paint the wall black or navy. This will hide/minimize the TV and add contrast and drama to the fireplace surround.

Everyone saying to move the TV is right. Get the TV placed where you can watch it without glare from the window light, or install a window covering capable of blocking the light for TV watching. 

I also cannot see the additional pictures you posted showing the whole room. Can anyone explain why? I've tried all the tricks I know.

My guess is that when you get the furniture arranged correctly, the fireplace is not the focal point of the whole room, and you may not want to "accent" that wall in your overall design. Perhaps that is why the fireplace surround is so simple in the first place.

Do not see additional pictures or room plan (both would help) but right now the placing of TV feels odd and it’s hard to advice on the accent wall without seeing a whole space. Are you going to paint the room itself as well?

The arch feels odd. Ot needs some roundish art to balance.

For TV. If you are dead set on keeping it maybe invest in one of those newer TVs which look like art

Hi, Katie, why do you want an accent wall? You already have a nice focal wall, but it actually has too much stuff - Show off the fireplace by moving the TV to another wall and mounting it lower for best viewing, and getting a screen that only covers the firebox opening, and hanging art (or mirror only if it will reflect a pretty view). If you don’t like the result, then paint.

Consider that your fireplace surround is arched, the inspo photos are not arched, so adding tile or shiplap on your wall won’t look like the inspo photos unless you remove the arch

If you keep the TV above the fireplace, add electrical outlet behind the mounting plate so power cord doesn’t show. Best bet is to move tv to another wall. The wrong fireplace screen is throwing off the look. Do you want a mantle? Do you want to keep the arch? If the room is very long, create 2 conversation areas.

Ergonomically, why do you wish to look up to watch tv? Bad for posture.
