Should I be worried about sunlight and heat coming through windows for 3% shade?

I think you should be fine. I have 5% and find that it's enough for my climate, personally (for heat gain and also for glare) --- but note my windows are east facing. (Also, it gets hot in Seattle in the summer, but IDK if your city gets hotter.) I wrote a long post about it here, weighing out various pros and cons. If you scroll down, you will see what I settled on and some before and after pics.

White shades will help control heat gain way better than dark colors. (I had dark shades at first. They block the sun, but also absorb heat and radiate it into the room. My new white solar shades reflect the light and stay cooler.) Also, white shades will help the room feel brighter, even when shut. But dark colors will give you a better view out, esp if you are going with a tighter weave like 3%. Dark color shades will also be better if you have a TV opposite the window (my white shades are bright when the sun hits them directly, and that reflects off the screen).

The percentages refer to OPENNESS not shade. There's a big difference.

I have 10% open solar shades in charcoal/bronze because I want to see the view when the shades are down.

Have you considered window film instead of shades? They'd allow you to reduce the heat buildup from sunlight without blocking the view. And you wouldn't have to manipulate them during the day. I have a large skylight which made my condo miserable in summer until I applied insulating window film to it.
