Induction horror stories??? (I'm getting one.)

Hello! I have decided that I do not want a gas range, so I'd like to switch to induction. I need a 36" range.

What do you HATE about yours? (I've read all the love!)

I'm particularly curious about the noise - from the cooling fan and the burners.

People say the new Bosch's cooling fan sounds like an airplane taking off in their kitchen (I'm sure that's dramatic!).

I'm down to Wolf, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, and Frigidaire. Yes, quite a range, but these all seem decent, with service in my area.

All i want is a decently even and consistent oven, a quiet cooling fan, and a shot at reliability (I know no one knows!). I care about functionality over features.

I don't need all the bells and whistles (for example, the Wolf menu electronic controls are overkill for me...but then the Wolf oven with the dual blowers seems pretty good!).

I'd love to hear what you hate...to see if I can live with that.

Thank you!!!

I have a 30” induction range and love it. Cooling fan no different than my previous electric range… certainly quieter than the hood!

I have had my GE profile induction cooktop for 18 months now and so glad i took the plunge - i will never go back to radiant or gas. there is nothing i hate, just small things that bug me so next time i know to look for in the next model. when i set a metal utensil or lid down near the cooking zone it sometimes automatically turns it off, i assume this is for safety. it also automatically turns to on in standby when something metal is placed on it, but wont activate unless you press on with your finger. also mine is the press button controls so if you want medium you need to scroll all the way through from high to medium or low to medium - next one i may do knobs or slide style. but otherwise i really like it and no regrets.

36" Frigidaire Induction cooktop - incredibly wonderful, and reasonably priced. Quiet, quick cooking, easy to clean. My 2nd Induction cooktop in different homes - would never choose anything else. ONLY downside is the likely need to get some new pans. That, and remembering that some things cook faster than you expect, I suppose.

Separate Bosch electric oven, works fine - but the cooktop is the one I love.

I'd imagine the Frigidaire Induction Range is similar - it will be an electric oven as well.

Thanks everyone! Also curious if the burner "buzzing" is annoying to you, any children or teens around, or small animals? Do you hear it? I've heard it can sometimes be unbearable to children/teens or dogs...but I'm not sure if this is true or not. Thank you!

Oh, also, how is that noise when something is on simmer? Most active cooking is like 30 minutes max...but simmer could be for hours. Thank you!

We have a GE Profile induction slide in range (convection oven) and it’s the greatest thing ever. Very precise and even heating on the cooktop and in the range. We will never go back to gas. We don’t have any negatives.

Bosch and Electrolux have 36" induction ranges. You don't have to go cooktop and separate wall oxen. You should check them out in person.

I’ve got the 36” F and P - I have not noticed a buzzing with the burners. The oven fan doesn’t bother me. We considered the Wolf, AGA, Bertazonni and the Fulgor. Also liked the 30” Miele.

I have clients who hated the choice and ones who love induction I will probably never goinduction mostly because I have a huge selection of pots I bout in Ital and none are induction type and are in 6K range to replace .I think how you cook is the driving force. I agree a 36" oven is over kill most of the time I have 36" 6 burner all gas range and double electric wall ovens 27" all the ovens are convection and I prefer some things done in a gas oven like yeast doughs for instance . I run a catering biz from my home so all the appliances I have are needed for my style of cooking.

I have never experienced a buzzing sound - have the Bosch and love it.

Thanks everyone! I currently have a 30" gas range - I've never had a problem with the size of the oven, but I do find the 36" cooktop lacking. I'm going to look into cooktop + wall oven...this will necessitate cabinet redesign and rewiring, but I'm in it this deep so whatever! :) Unfortunately, I don't have any wall space...would have to put the oven under the countertop. Too bad because I do love higher ovens - much better ergonomics! Thank you everyone!

I know you are not looking at Bertazzoni which is what I have (and love) but I do want to comment on those who say a 36" oven takes forever to preheat. In my experience, The Bert 36" oven preheats faster than my GE French Door electric wall oven. Not by much but it does.

I have the 36" Wolf Induction range. No complaints. Love how easy it is to clean. As far as noise, depends on the pots, but it is never comes close to the vent hood turned to high! I rarely use the 36" oven as I also have a Miele CSO XXL.

People are affected differently by different noises. My DH can leave the TV volume on in 2 different rooms with 2 different shows playing and add music playing in a third room and not be bothered ... but turn on a single vent hood and you are making a racket! The different voices and music bother me much more than a single vent hood!

I don't have induction but would if I could. I had a friend who just remodeled her kitchen - hadn't heard of induction before but I suggested the GE Profile Induction double oven range. She got it and they love it - like many, would never go back. They don't seem to have any issues with noise.

I would suggest you go look at 30" induction ranges. Space on a 30" range is highly dependent on the way the top burners are configured. The 30" range in my last house was a pain to cook on - it was too small. The 30" range in the apartment we lived in while our house was being built? Felt totally spacious. So it really depends on the burner layout.

The negative about cooktops is they have the controls on the top so you actually lose space on top. The GE profile range has knobs in front, so it doesn't take up any space on your cooktop. A lot of people prefer the knobs to the electrical push buttons, so take that into consideration as well.

Personally I prefer a range for a number of reasons. I have a rangetop with a double oven now and wish I could go back to a range. Biggest one is the distance - I do a lot of range to oven cooking and I do not like having to carry things across the kitchen. Part of that is kitchen layout, but either way you're traveling with hot items. Second is the exhaust. I miss being able to turn on the exhaust fan when using the oven (particularly bacon, or if something burns).

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors Beautiful kitchen! That is the exact set up I would have to have in my kitchen...it's an Eichler with not very much space! Is that a Bosch built in fridge too (the handles look similar, so I'm assuming yes?)? I already have a Bosch dishwasher and microwave (I know it makes no sense to be purchasing things piecemeal, missing out on rebates, but this is an ever-expanding renovation, unfortunately!!). The Sub-zero fridges are now like 12-18 months out, and I just want to be DONE with my renovation! I'd also love to save some money, of course!

I called Wolf, and they said that there is no reduction in power with the range sharing the 50 amp plug, as compared to doing a cooktop and wall oven separately. Those who say separate is better...what are your thoughts on that? @User @User

@Lee M I was considering the Classic F&P, but the oven looks very shallow. What do you think?

I saw the Electrolux ECFI3668AS at the showroom today, and I think that looks decent! I believe it's the same unit as the Frigidaire Professional PCFI3670AF. At half the price of the Wolf, they're tempting. I did try the electronic controls on the Wolf induction range - I did not expect to like them, but I did like them, actually.

I also saw the Thermador induction cooktop, which is unique in that it is gray in color (rather than black). I am planning white marble, so that would be nice - although I'm thinking of perhaps switching to granite for where the cooktop is, if I go that direction...does anyone have thoughts on soft, porous marble for where the cooktop is? Is that a bad idea?

The Thermador Freedom induction cooktop is very impressive in that you can put pots and pans anywhere. But I'm not sure if that flexibility is worth the high price tag.

Thank you all! This is very instructive.

All the appliances in that kitchen are Bosch. They're nice looking, work well, and are reasonably priced. I'd also look at Monogram.

@sierra90 Could you please tell me what kind of Frigidaire you have? I'm considering the 36" Frigidaire Professional range PCFI3670AF, and also the 36" Electrolux range ECFI3668AS (I believe they are the same inside). I'm wondering how loud the cooling fan on the oven is?

Would love also to hear what you had before, if you don't mind?

I read a review on the Frigidaire - someone said they don't like that there are 9 levels for the hobs (they wanted more, as they had more with their previous induction cooktop) - wondering what your experience is with that?

    Thank you!

I have the GE Cafe unduction range. Im happy overall with the unit, but im nit convinced that it was wirth the price to upgrade from the standard smooth top.

I have a Bosch and the only complaint is the buzzing. But from reading here it may be my CUTCO cookware? Its also strange that is buzzes more if I turn on certain lights in the room........The buzzing at simmer is minimal. It's at full power that it's the loudest, so then I run the exhaust fan and that drowns it out.

@Kim Weaver Today, I went to see a live model at the appliance store. There was a definite difference in buzzing on 2 different pans - the "quiet" one I could still hear, but I think I had to put my head up to the pan (that I felt safe to do so says a lot about induction!). Oddly, the store music went on when the demo started (I was there at opening)...I joked, is the music wired to go on with the induction cooktop?! :) That is so weird about the lights. I did notice when he showed me how you can cook through a paper towel, the buzzing seemed louder? I have heard great things about the Bosch, but the new 36" range (the size I need) has bad reviews for oven fan noise...which I wouldn't be able to handle, unfortunately! Thank you for your review!

I think it all depends on your level of cooking! We had a Samsung that we had for 11 years until we moved. No problem with it. We had purchased an appliance package for Samsung products. Our current kitchen I didn’t care about matchy matchy appliances plus we were in mid Covid/supply issues. I will only have Bosch dishwashers… ( after disaster DW issues with Samsung.)
Our Frigidaire is a 30”. We like it, I dislike the ridge over the oven part to stove top. Sliding hot pans long it causes scratches. Small issue! Controls are fine, any new range is a lesson curve. I agree that good quality pots and pans are probably a good idea. We also have some ikea stuff though. Having said this- really don’t have any buzzing issues. Again- would never go back to regular electric or gas. Good luck in your choices!

@sierra90 LOL, the person who complained in a review that they needed more levels said that they needed them to crisp up frozen wontons!! hahahaha, so I'm not sure what that means for the "level of cooking" thing! haha. I totally agree regarding Bosch dishwashers - love them!!! Thank you so much for your help!

we have a Miele 36" cooktop, full size Wolf oven with Miele speed oven above it since 2013 and all have been flawless. miele cooktop does do a slight buzz when using a small all-clad pot, but it subsides when heated. the rest of my All-Clad, LeCrueset and Lodge are buzz-less.

another one who would never go back to gas/coil/radiant, had them all.

bring a magnet to the store when shopping for cookware!

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors after seeing your pic i shopped the bosch website but dont see any 36" ovens like you show here under the induction cooktop. Did you put a 36" cooktop with a 30" wall oven under it?

For a non-stick frying pan choice look at the 10" and 12" OXO set for $40 at Costco. Americas Test Kitchen found it the best they tested in the non-induction version. This new model is now induction capable. So far they pass every test I've applied.

We have a Samsung Chef induction range, so not one of your choices. Here's my induction horror story. This AM, I decided to heat a cup and a half of milk for oatmeal, set the knob for the burner to something medium-ish and wandered into the adjacent pantry. I grabbed the oatmeal and returned to find the milk boiling over in a lovely, frothy fountain. We've had the induction for seven years and yet I still calculate heating times as if it were our prior electric range. Love my induction and I'm sure you will, too. PS: They're not kidding about how fast it will heat food.

I hate to say it, but I have low expectations of any Samsung appliance. our house came with a couple of new Samsung appliances, and they started showing signs of wear and tear after only a year. they feel so cheaply made.

We have a countertop induction burner we bought to try out induction. Regarding the sound only kids and dogs can hear, it is real. At least on a cheap countertop burner. Our teen can sometimes hear a sound we can’t. She doesn’t like it, but it’s not terrible. The dog would run to another room at first. But now he stays in the room. So maybe the new sound was scary to him at first. But it must not be painful since he got used to it.

Love my Kenmore induction, no complaints. Stay away from Samsung however, theyre junk. Mine lasted three years. And there is at least one class action around catching on fire during clean mode.

Love my F&P 30 inch induction range- we’ve had it about 18 months; no issues at all. Occasionally I hear a slight buzz when I first start to heat something, but as soon as I notice it, it’s gone! I’m so happy with this purchase.
