Painted white or black stained built-ins?

I have a mostly open concept living room and kitchen area. I plan to put in painted white cabinents and a black stained island in the kitchen. There is also a bar/second island separating the two rooms. The living room will have built ins around the fireplace. I have light (coretec cyril oak) vinyl floors and a light-medium grey couch. The walls are SW white duck, a kind of creamy/griege color. The room is southern facing with large windows and 14' ceilings. Should the built ins and bar be painted white to match the cabinets or stained black to match the island? My designer said I could go either way, but I can't decide. I like the idea of stained black for durability but white for the light and airiness. We have four wild kids. Thanks for your input.
