Empty wall dilemma

My family room walls are so boring and I don’t know how to improve them! I think they need something above the windows but I don’t know what.
**The woven window shades are new, so kindly don’t suggest changing those😬.

I wouldn’t put anything above the windows.

Nothing above the windows. Don't detract from the star of the show, your fireplace. If you want to add some softness to the room, you could put stationary side panel drapes beside the windows. Neutral colours, with some texture.

I also agree not to put anything on your walls above your windows.

I love that example of the navy drapery panels! I think that would make it less drab.

I would actually pull the sectional off of the window walls and put in sofa tables behind them that have plants on them and maybe an arc light.

It isn't your walls that are boring. The whole room is beige and blue. You need some other colors added in. I would look for another area rug that has more color in it, with maybe some of that rust/red color on the fireplace brick.

I'm surprised how much I like @BeverlyFLADeziner's lighter blue-grey wall paint. The room looks more balanced. The rug no longer looks out of place.

I think the windows look unfinished. I would replace the rug (as suggested by @chispa) and then add drapery panels in a color from the rug

Color on the walls. Like the suggestion of a blue

Beverly's second photo idea works very well for me. i do like your area rug - it just needs something like that to bring it out!

Probably not an option, but if anybody else reads this post - get rid of the sectional that's blocking good windows light and get a couch and chairs that can be positioned away from the windows. The sectional is hogging up the room, it's heavy and bland. I agree on the drapery, i think the way it is styled looks really nice so i would add in the drapes and maybe a large wall clock

I agree with ditching the sectional if it's an option. If not, maybe see if it fits the other direction. Shame to block all those windows.

    I like the blue walls

if you did a proper window casing, it would finish off the look of the windows a lot better

    tall drapes are an option

And lastly, a diff ottoman or even a table. that one is ok, but it's a little small and dark.

the ceiling fan would be the next thing to change. You have canned lights. do you really need lights on the fan too?

You could do some table lamps if you need diff lighting.

otherwise, a fan (if you use the fan) w/no lights,

    or a nice chandelier

Here's a few diff mock ups

I would pull that sectional out a bit give it some breathing room…all you need us some beautiful neutral panels similar to your woven blinds color…use black rods….also pull your ottoman out it should be at least 18”-20” away from front of the sectional…and I would work on getting a bigger coffee table…you could add a couple wall lights too.

Pull your furniture away from those walls. Add a full drapery panel in a simple print to windows. Put sofa tables behind sofas and add a couple lamps and interesting accessories. Add ottoman with tray for drinks.
