You may need to run like a conduit on the ceiling face. or an exposed cable.

IMO floor lamps and table lamps are part of a good lighting system but I need to see your space . Maybe choose much better bulbs for lighting I use LED 4000k bulbs all through my house .

Many bedrooms rely on table & floor lamps for general lighting.

If you want it as evenly lit as a modern office, you can add LED flat panel lights with conduit on a dimmer switch. If you'd prefer slightly less even lighting, one to three round flat LED lights and a full perimeter of LED strip lights may work well. You can try that idea out with a few battery operated stick-on LED lights for under $20 each.

Crown molding glued near the ceiling with LED rope light. This will light the whole perimeter of the room if that is the look you are going for.

@Lorraine Leroux I watched a video on You Tube about this just now and it looked like the centre of the room was dark while the perimeter was lit up. Definitely not what I want.

My niece has a similar situation, wants a ceiling fan and light in her living room, but the ceiling isn't accessible. The electrician said he can run the wires on the outside of the ceiling in some kind of conduit, painted to match the ceiling so it isn't overly obvious.
