10 ft (120") Island Drawer Organization

Planning to have a 10ft (120") island in our new kitchen.

Would you rather have four 30" drawer stacks or

two 30", two 18" and one 24" stack?

What herbflavor said. A 36" drawer wil be much more useful than 2 18" drawers.

I would go with the largest drawers offered.

too many little drawers don't offer the options for storage needed today.

Large drawers with a peg/board system for all sorts of storage from Pots & Pans to Dishes.

you can always customize the interior with stacking trays for flatware, etc.

Extra drawers also adds cost because of the extra slides and hardware. i don’t have any drawers that are less than 30”. Use dividers if necessary.

Figure out what you are using those drawers for! Is this where you store your plates, glasses etc, or your cookware? I use my island drawers for our everyday dishes. When I was deciding on the drawer size for my pots and pans, I took them all out...arranged them with some space like they would be inside a drawer and measured around. I'm by no means OCD about anything...this little bit of extra work was so worth it! I had 18" drawers in my old kitchen (built in the 90's) and they were not useful for anything else but collecting junk. My current drawers vary from 22" to 40" (except for the small one above trash), my island stack is 34" wide.

I agree, it depends on what you have to store. I have all 24” drawers and except for one 33” drawer. (Pots are elsewhere). I hate the 33” drawer because it’s too big for one single type of item. My potholders have to share with spices and that drives me nuts. I also can’t handle the thought of two different width drawers next to each other. There’s nothing else in this island? No dishwasher, trash, beverage refrigerator, microwave?

you can split the top drawer when doing the wider size,as below.... you can set the drawers any way you like really . just more value to generally install " wider overall " dimension ...then pick more shallow ...4 layers of drawers vs 2or 3 bigger drawers etc. Lucky if kitchen can have great variety..... If smaller kitchen ? be discriminating about those few drawer stacks and get them perfect for needs. spend on drawer specs.. sizes of the drawers/ weight requirement/ glides/ etc...understand what you can do.

Herbflavor, we did a split top drawer when we remodeled our kitchen, and that was one of my few regrets. I could have easily put a divider in a wide drawer, and had more space overall. I did 2 drawers because I was storing completely different things in the 2 drawers (potholders in one, "junk drawer" in the other), but a divider would have kept the two sides separate.

I agree that the drawer sizes that are right for you depend on what you will be storing in them.

Thanks everybody. Nixed the arrangement w/ 18" and now deciding between:

    4 30" stacks and

    2 36" + 2 24"

    Any final thoughts?

Agree with Elizabeth. We have a 30” stack now and its awesome, planning on 2x 36” in the island for our reno. Are sure there’s nothing else you want in an island as mentioned above? Our 24” will be a drawer micro and beverage fridge.

36-times 2 . you will have no problem filling those. one of the 24 inch stacks could be divided into two 12 in pull out base pantry. these seem so handy . the cabinet front attaches ..you are lucky you have so many inches...have you calculated "what goes where." / consider dividing one of the 24 inch ....

This has worked really well for us (I love it, as the main cook)

4 29" drawers on the left, top is misc tools, bottom three are skillets and small pans.

12" pullout for oils, vinegars, misc sauces

2 36" drawers in the center for larger pots and other things

12" pullout for spatula, tongs, whisks, ladels, etc

3 29" drawers for spices and various mixing bowls

I love that most everything I need to use while cooking is within easy reach.

Michael, your drawers are heavenly! What organization system did you use?

    Thanks!
Those are rev-a-shelf inserts and drawer pullouts.

We added a double trash on the end because this is the opposite end of the kitchen than our sink and other trash. Rest is split evenly, I think 30” drawers. This is 9.5’.

What is a good pull out double trash for a high trash family? I'm planning my kitchen too. 200ft walk to take trash out to the bin... I'd like to limit my trips.
