I think cable would be a lot easier than glass which would need regular cleaning, especially if children or dogs are there.

I can only comment re my experience i had glass surrounding my patio at the beach, required weekly cleaning . .It was the moisture , not dogs or children, that made it high maintenance.

• Glass railing maintenance would be cleaning it really, not much else you can do to it.

I just have to add - picking up dead birds?

Thank you. I was thinking the glass would have to be cleaned each time it rained. It really does seem like it would be a pain. Thanks you all for your input.

K Laurence, haha, I have three toddler grandchildren and a dog (occasionally two) who constantly puts his nose on glass French doors, windows, whatever, so that was my first thought of reasons to avoid glass. The second was birds flying into it and then, rain.
