Thoughts on this mosaic for bathroom floor?

Hi

we are olanning a renovation of our small master bathroom. The tile store said this tile is appropriate and is sold often for floors. Does anyone have a floor tile like this and can comment on cleaning ? Comfort on feet? Its very pretty, but want to make sure of how practical it will be from others that may have something similar. Thanks

I agree it's pretty, but in small doses; I think it could be overwhelming as a whole floor, even a small one. And the idea of that many grout lines, particularly in a bathroom, gives me pause. We had 2"X2" tiles in our master bath, and, when we remodeled, we went with 2'X 2'. We did that intentionally because we were tired of cleaning the grout. Another thing to think about is whether over time there will be an adhesion problem with any of those individual, tiny mosaic pieces.

It's really pretty, but it doesn't look like it would be comfortable underfoot. And keeping the grout clean will be a full-time job. Maybe just use as an accent piece somewhere like a shower niche or a small inlay in front of the vanity or something.

It could work in a half-bath, but it could be overwhelming in a larger space.

Thank you both for your opinions

This tile would only be on the floor and the floor space is only 5x5, there will be a vanity and the toilet , so visually, its not that much visual space. That is the reason I was thinking a tight pattern mosaic, as large format tiles would just get chopped up. We currently have medium size square tiles. The size fits fine, but they are nothing special and so generic.

The small tiles popping up is something to think about kudzu9. aziline, yes, I agree with you, i would do a similar grout color. i like how it looks.

There is another ine I Saw that I am considering as well. I could only bring one sample home at a time. This is the other one.

Both are gorgeous. You only live once. Go for it

    Lol… thank you stacey

I prefer the second. The first seems like hair would be a harder clean up.

I like the matte (2nd one) much better than the shiny/sparkly. It's beautiful and flexible. You can do many types of decor with it to create many looks. You won't tire of it.

    Thanks Shasta!!

its actually not very refectuve in person.. The other one also has the same amount of reflectiveness. I just dodnt have the actual sample to photograph. Both have a mix of honed/ matte with polished.

they are both pretty for sure. the other is gray and white, this one is gray white with a touch of light beige.

What cleaning products can you use on that? I never want anything “precious” on a floor or in a bathroom that has to be pampered when I clean.

Thought I recognized the brand! I used Artistic Tile for a kitchen backsplash before.

    https://www.artistictile.com/products/motor-city-circles-smotorcitycircles?variant=33496013471832

It does suggest you use a special cleaner in the specs.

Also look at the photo they posted. It is on a wall and you can see some lipage and areas that have depressed grout. If it was a less used powder room, I would have said go for it, but for a master bath, it won't be the easiest to clean or keep clean. Also this is marble, so any urine will etch the tile.

You will need an excellent tile person to make this tile look good.

    Thanks chispa .

    yes its artisric tile

it says its a mix of vanilla onyx, and marble. . I do have honed carrara marble floors in another bathroom, thankfully no issues.

thank you for commenting about the photo, possible lipoage.

i will take a look at it . The tile shop said it was ok for floors, the website said okay for floors; but this is why I like houzz…. real people and sometimes pros, who may have had other experiences or insights about a product being considered. very helpful .

I always like to ask my tiler for their opinions - often they have had another job with the tile and seen the good and bad - if they are experienced they can give you tons of good advice

I'd be wary of using mother of pearl as flooring. A wall installation? OK. Take a look at Artistic Tile or any other manufacturer with marble mosaics. I think those will hold up much better.

    Hello -

I don't think any form of mother of pearl is rated as flooring, due to the thin nature of mother of pearl it is susceptible to chipping. This mosaic has plenty of grout lines to make slippage less of an issue, but I think it would feel fairly sharp/rough on bare feet, too. It can be used as a wall tile, however, and it's luminosity and reflective value is gorgeous! I prefer your second option for flooring as the materials are stronger, more durable, with larger pieces and set more flush but still has a lot of movement like your frrst choce. Good Luck!

    Thanks everyone

a few of you have commented about mother of pearl. The first tile i posted is not mother of pearl. It is a mix dolomite marble and vanilla onyx.; correct me if I am wrong, but dont believ vanilla onyx and mother of pearl are the same thing (?) I think they are two different materials. I just want to clarify that in case that makes any difference; maybe it doesnt 🤷‍♀️ I had never heard of vanilla onyx before seeing this tile, but it exists in other forms of tile and slabs as well. Both of these mosaic tiles are from Artistic Tile. Regardless, many of you all have very good points to consider looking into. Truly appreciate all the helpful asvice. being given.

My bathroom mosaic is a simpler pattern but it too is marble and onyx. Four years with no issues but I dont have lippage

A mosaic floor in a small bath can be quite effective. Don't select the floor alone without giving thought to the other finishes you will use in the room.

This mosaic floor grabs most of the attention because the vanity and grasscloth wallcovering complement the colors of the marble. Note how the design has been installed as an inlay with a border which is very effective in the design of this room.

Thank you cpartist. good to hear from someone who has vanilla onyx. I had never heard of it , but it is very pretty. matbe ill end up with it, matbe I wont. Just in beginning phase of planning right now.

yes Bev, I understand what you are saying. The barhroom is bery snall, so I agree that a mosisc would give a nice impact in a space where I dont have many options. Im figuring choose floor first and then I can choose the shower wall and showerr floor tiles. Bathroom walls will just be painted. Getting a Small vanity with some sort of stone top ,( probably a honed marble ) with extending 6- 8 inch high backsplash behind it; Id like a higher than average 4 inch splash.

It's quite glamorous. What else will you be doing with the bathroom decor?

And, how about the adjoining bedroom? Will it be glamorous?

I can't see it with just plain old paint on the wall.

You can see its a very small bathroom in need of much improvent. Its over 15 years old, no storage, worn out. Was here when we purchased.

Plan is to gut it, add storage cubby/ shelves to the bumped out wall behind the shower.

Add a small vanity with some storage,( drawers/ doors- whatever we can fit)

Add a mirror medicine cabinet above sink for storage

    new lighting fixture above mirror

Add a shallow 6 inch deep wall cabinet that matches the vanity above toilet for storage.

Floor and shower walls/ floor will be tiled.

Pull down bench seat in shower added

    Shower wall niche added

    Walls painted .

Vanity to have stone top with extending backsplash.

yes, thet are both fancy or glamous looking tiles.. As for just using paint for the walls, once you add a vanity , a mirror medicine cabinet , a wall cabinet, a few cubbies in the bump out, consider the window, and the bathroom door, there really isnt all that much wall to consider having to donsomething with.

There is a half wall of tile now, and homestly, it doesnt add much tto the bathroom. A lot of cuts had to be made to go arpund the window, radiator , corners etc. With a mosaic floor, and some pretty shower wall tiles, a nice lighting fixiture, new faucet with some matchimg hardware, I really dont feel that the walls being painted will lessen the look I think the tiles will carry the bathroom and it will be quite elegant. Its a small bathroom, so I feel a little use of nice quality, statements type tile and quality vanity and top , will go a long way.

very pretty tile. very delicate tile. I don't think it would be terribly bad for the master bath. I wouldn't wear shoes while getting ready to go out.

get a written guarantee from the tile place that it's rated for the floor. It should be fine.

These are all MOP and marble

this is a similar type of tile. I like how they went curbless and continued the flooring into the shower.

what if you used it behind the vanity like a wainscot? similar to where your current tile is

(are you keeping the same console sink?) (I'd think about doing a thinner mirror, sconces on the side, or even some pendants.

Thassos and MOP floor tile. This is similar to your layout.

You could do this on the floor, border it w/a white dolomite tile, and do a regular panel wainscot behind the sink/toilet area. Very pretty

If you want a matching white onyx tile, Tilebar carries it

Some people would use onyx on the floor. Some people who don’t have pets, kids, or a husband with bad aim. Some people who like to renovate as a hobby, and do so frequently.

Other people who wear shoes inide, have pets and kids, and only want to spend money on doing this once, wouldn’t use that tile even on the walls. They would use a pretty patterened white on white wallpaper, with a simple white tile with a bit of textural appeal in the wet zone. And maybe something like the colorbody porcelain Daltile Keystones in a custom mosaic for the floor, with a light gray, medium gray, and white, creating a pattern, or a random pattern.

Thanks you very much beth. Very nice suggestions. Nothing is staying in this barhroom. There is no storage in here and its awful. I wrote above a few responses back what we are planning on doing; not sure you saw that. With adding a storage vanity , there really isnt mich visually to see once a vanity and toilet go it , which is why are leaning towards not applying anybting to that wall. Its a small space, ( barely 5 feet wide ) so it would be hard to appreciate any tile or wainscoating once installed with a wood vanity and toielt in front of it unfortunatley. You see the tile now because its a console sink, and open st the bottom. We sre not using a console type. I need storage , so it will be a wooden vanity with drawers, or doors, and therefore, the wall will be covered. we did toss around the idea , but the more we thought about it, the more it didnt make sense to really do. seemed like wed just be covering up any work or detail.

Wow! That's beautiful tile!  I hope you go for it. I'd like to know the whole plan before committing, and even then I'm nervous...my current project has me a little nervous and I planned it all out over a year ago.

You want to paint the walls. Is there a shower? I'm thinking of the transition. I saw a different post that went on forever and caused the OP to go through all sorts of angst finding a wall tile to go with her beautiful floor tile.

Here is the link to the other poster who started with a beautiful floor.

My question us how to these fit together? It would bother me since it appears the partial circles just butt up against other partial circles.

Personally think its too much for a bathroom, however for a powder room its perfect. You could use it as a feature tile in the shower or behind the mirror and vanity. It looks like it will chip and easily damage and lose its luster over time.

Good point about how the tiles look fitted to each other… what does the website show?

those tiles come in sheets that fit together like puzzle pieces.

The sample she has in the picture is just a small square that the tile store did to prop up in their store. It's prob done on a piece a wood so they could grout it.

Thanks beth H. yes , you are correct. both styles I posted are the same type. They come in sheets. Im not following what the concern is about how they fit together. I don't see what others are questioning. (?)

We thought that was a single tile. We didn't know it was pieces of multiple tiles, maybe 3, that had been put together on a square board. But that's beside the point. They are very pretty. I hope you figure out the rest of the bathroom materials and transitions between them before laying the floor. The transitions are the hardest part for me.

Aaahh! got it KL. I didnt understsnd what was being questioned. Yes, they are like puzzle pieces, so they all interliock. What I have here is one of those large mock up boards the tile store has on display. He let me take the whole thing. Im going to get the other tile board I am considering later to see how that looks.
