Bathroom soffit/structural beam

last modified: 3 years ago

We are in the final stages of prepping for a bathroom remodel in our 1968 split entry house. Since I started working on this, I have been dreaming about removing the soffit and ridiculous molding around the "tray ceiling." When I made a hole in the drywall to see if there was anything in the soffit, I discovered that there is a structural beam running parallel to the bathtub. Clearly, it is cost-prohibitive to remove the beam, so how do I work around it? How do I deal with the ugly molding? Take out the soffit, and wrap the beam? Leave the entire ceiling alone, and stare at my design failure for the rest of our time in this house? The tray ceilings are marked by the red boxes on the layouts below. Help!
