My house was built in the early 70s. The fireplace was more than likely installed with the initial build. I want to remodel and take out this hideous hearth and install an electric fireplace from a box extension. This fireplace will never be used (I've lived in Oahu, Hawaii for two years and the coldest temperature has been 64) to it's full potential and is a serious eyesore (as well as a catch-all for family anything) in the room instead of a focal point.

The wall its setting in is actually serves as a retaining wall which is more than likely cinder block. I would really like to tear up this asymmetrical design but am afraid of what's underneath the hearth. Is the hearth built on a concrete pad even with the floor? Or am I going to pull up brick and find dirt underneath along with a world of trouble? I'm seriously worried that it's going to have to stay. I'll take any and all advice to help fix this. Thank you!
