Is this a 1940s house with a vintage slate entry floor? I think I really like the flooring and wouldn't change it! And I love the simple elegance of the white walls, banisters, even the heating register.

Tell us more about how you use the entry. Is it just for guests, or a busy hub where everyone comes and goes from the family room, bedrooms, and kitchen? Do you need furniture here or are you just looking for decor to anchor the room?

I would just paint the slate.

It is a 1960s house, traditional with some midcentury elements. To the left of the front door is a double door hall closet. This is the main walkway between the bedrooms / kitchen / living room and downstairs to the cozy family / tv room. Aka this room is high traffic. There isn’t room for furniture but here’s another picture.

Perhaps what is needed is simply a new rug - style, color, and size. Your current entry rug is burgundy, which isn't my favorite color in your floor and seems to date the space. Is the nearby room painted a green? What rugs could the design team suggest to pull together the surrounding spaces and give you the "fun" that you desire?

Hi, in my opinion the two rugs in that space are two different design styles, pattern & color which needs to change, artwork already present is not standing out as it's merging with the wall color, adding indoor planters will change the space.

I like the current slate floor. It is beautiful and unique. I think the issue (if any) is that from what I can see in the adjacent room - your style is very traditional/transitional - and so the bold, MCM type floor is sort of the unwelcome guest.

I don’t know if painting the floor solves that, because you still would have the free-flowing/staggered design/patterning of the slate - plus, you then permanently alter the floor.

As another option, you could consider getting a much larger entry rug - that complements the rug in the adjacent area. The entry rug does not have to match that other rug in color, etc.; but should be a similar style - and an entry rug that would just about completely cover the slate floor.

I love Paul's idea of creating a room divider and I got to thinking about all the cool room dividers from the MCM era.

Add both a division and create a space for art or sculpture or a small table for keys. . .

Start with new large size wall decor for the 2 walls where you now have the mirror and the 2 smaller pictures. How about one being a big macrame piece as a nod to the MCM elements?

Then choose a rug that ties into the decor of the fireplace room and the art.

I like the slate floor and wouldn't change it. I'd change the door pulls on the closet to match the front door.

IMO all great ideas, but I’m with those addressing the difference in style between the MCM foyer and the much more traditional living room. Whichever style you are more comfortable with should ultimately win out, but I feel like you should pick one or the other. And of course budget comes into play.

I agree with you about the flooring. Can you replace it? If not, then would suggest finding a rug large enough to cover it up.

Agree with the points on competing traditional and mcm styles. That is the story of this house! The mcm fireplace with traditional mantle is a perfect example of this. Most of the family furniture passed to us has been traditional antiques. I’m constantly trying to figure out smaller projects or purchases to help bring everything together, but feel like this floor is really holding us back. I’ll try a rug first and if that doesn’t solve it then we will explore painting it 🫠
