Yes if you are interested in leaving the 90s behind.

IMO you do not need dimmers in a kitchen put the under cabinet lighting on one switch and all the 4" pot lights on another switch but IMO 4000K LEDs are much better in a kitchen and please no pots bigger than 4" Is this what you were asking?

The existing lights are attached to junction boxes in the ceiling. You'd normally have to first remove those junction boxes before you installed recessed lights. If you didn't want to do that you might consider the Halo SMD4 LED 4" Round/Square Surface-Mount Downlights (specs) which can be attached to those existing junction boxes. For new lights, you could drill holes in the ceiling for retrofit housings (example: Halo 245 retrofit housing) and attach the same downlights using the Halo SMD4ACCKIT kit.

Of course, removing the junction boxes would give you more flexibility in the choice of lights but you risk messing up the ceiling to remove the boxes.

Recessed lights with LED bulbs are a true “one-and-done” project. And yes, they can be on dimmers if you’d like that. Just make sure you by the LED bulbs that work with a dimmer.

Our kitchen has 9 recessed lights over the main cooking area and three over the sink-island area. There is also a chandelier in the eating area and under mount lights for the countertops. It gives us options to have all of these different kinds of lights.

Think this through before doing anything so you do it right for your needs.

Recess lights or some pretty flush mount light fixtures. The closer to the ceiling they are the more light they will give if you. Pendant light only focus on one spot.

I don't think it necessarily has to be recessed. There are plenty of good looking track light designs, and it would be easier to just replace them rather than installing cans. Besides, I think directional light is best for a kitchen, so you can point the light where you need it.

Thanks everyone I should let you know that the only thing I am changing is the lighting on the ceiling as the rest of the kitchen is staying the same. There are fush under counter lights already already. My kitchen is small with no island or any room for one. My house is built in 1938 and is full of pre 1940’s antiques.

It is inconsistent with the age of your house to use track lighting. If you can get an electrician, recessed lights will be less “modern” but give you good light.

An historic house is always challenging when it comes to lighting since many were built before electricity was in every home. Good to know you have under-mount lights already.

What if I replaced those track lights with these arts and crafts style ones? they are not so modern like the others. or these ones below?

They are very pretty …but seem a little over the top …style wise…usually they will fit better with more stylized cabinetry and other features that support that look…like a new …more decorative backsplash…and upgraded countertops…

If you are dying to go in this direction, then a big statement in all the hardware would help you get there…even new flooring with some black in it

This is the quartz countertop in the kitchen.

Are those two center fixtures giving you enough light? if so, there are many ways to go with two simple ceiling lights.
