Another Fur Kid Passed Over the Rainbow Bridge

last modified: 3 years ago

We were so blessed to have 3 wonderful, sweet, mellow fur babies for so long. Many years. And then, right after this past Thanksgiving, our wonderful boy, Knight, developed a fast moving, inoperable cancer. It had already spread to his spine and elsewhere. Our longtime vet sent him over the Rainbow Bridge that very day after exam and x-rays, of course with us all there hugging him to send him on. It was so incredibly painful!

And then, Doberman Rescue asked us to foster a stray Dobie who was recovering from surgery for a badly fractured right hip and back left leg. With DH a retired family practice doc, and me a retired x-ray and surgical tech, we were their first choice to take care of this boy with our combined experience. We picked him up New Year's Eve Day and named him Beau. He was sweet, loving, energetic, and 3/4 kangaroo, despite those healing fractures. When we took him to a vet specializing in orthopedics, she told us that he needed twice a week for many, many months physical therapy. About 45 minutes via interstate from us. Soooo, Beau sadly went to live with another foster mom who lives close to that PT place. She loves him and plans to adopt him. Wonderful person!

And then . . . just the other day, our beautiful, wonderful 14 y/o Tibetan Spaniel, India, also crossed over. Oh, that one just about did us all in! India, under another name, was the top Tibbie and dog in the country for about five years, with 105 Best-in-Show and First Place ribbons. Her owner, who bred and showed her was a family friend, gifted her to our DD when she stopped showing India. But, to us, she was just our beloved little baby girl.

And, so now we're down to just one fur baby for the time being, as we recover from all of this loss. Sasha, is also a Tibetan Spaniel and gifted (after she stopped showing her) from our breeder-friend. (Her photo is below, as Houzz will only let me post 3 at a time). This sweet, gentle girl just turned eleven and, believe me, she is loved and spoiled by us all (although not by over-feeding )! Our son just moved back in with us temporarily (from Augusta, GA) while he looks for a home around here, so he's also giving Sasha a lot of attention. She's been so very confused lately, with all her pals disappearing. So sad!

As you can probably tell, we are really an animal-loving family, although since both our kids are very allergic to cats, we stick with dogs. We'll get a few more soon, Right now, though, we're just remembering ours that are no longer with us. But, we know that there are (sadly) too many rescues out there, so that's where we'll be searching next.

Oh, I'm so, so sorry for the grief you are all enduring....! If grief is simply a reflection for the love we've lost, I know yours will be deep and enduring.... I wish all of our furbabies could have the kind of love during their lives that you and DH shared with yours......

Big hugs to you and your family - it's so very hard. We've lost 3 Australian Shepherds over the years and I miss them all so very much. Glad to hear you are not without canine companionship and plan to add more dogs to your family. There is so much love to be had and to give.

Lynn, so sorry for all the losses lately. You too Sue. I do recall Knight of course, and the little injured one you took in. Little India was so cute and I know you all miss her terribly.

I like to think that our beloved pets who have crossed the infamous rainbow bridge are all gathered together having a good ole time, talking about all of us! Our beautiful ragdoll kitty, Mazie, is 16 now & I can't stand that she wouldn't be with those who would love her as much as I know your sweet ones would.

I am so sorry Lynn. Though they may cross the rainbow bridge, they stay forever in our hearts.

I am still sad about our boy Lucky, who we lost last April. Last August we adopted another dog, who I cherish, but when I see a picture of the "Luckster" in his prime, my heart breaks every time. (Damn, now I am crying)

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Sue, and all who are still hurting from losing your own furbabies, I’m so sorry for your losses! I’m one of those people who honestly believes that all dogs ( and cats, too) do go to Heaven and that I will see my darling furbabies again someday. Localeater, you put it so wonderfully when you said, ”Though they may cross the Rainbow Bridge they stay forever in our hearts”. Thank you, yes they do!

i'm so sorry you have had to experience these losses so close together. it's bad enough to lose one, let alone multiples.

a few years ago, i lost 3 great danes all within 6 months of each other. they were all rescues with each having significant health issues so i know what you're going through.

    sending comforting hugs! 💞

That's a lot of loss for you in such a short time. There are no comforting words I can give. What I have experienced after the loss of a dog is to get another as soon as you can, not to replace the dog you lost, but to add more joy & smiles to you and your family and to sweet Sasha. Get a breed you're familiar with.

We never did that until we lost DH's dog, and a week later we went to the OKC Humane Society where we got these tiny little brothers who grew up to be big horses. Love them dearly. I do think the humane society charges exhorbitant prices though.

I don't know how I'm just now seeing this. I'm so sorry for your losses, and - you are so strong. The pain of losing one is partly why I haven't a pet right now. I am just beginning to discuss the possibility with DH, a puppy is becoming more attractive again. I might even be old and wise enough to train one correctly at this point.

I remember you taking in Beau and your search for a name, I didn't know about the PT and not being able to work that out. I have a feeling you will open your home to something perfect for your family soon.
