A reasonable assumption to be sure but it is not the pup. He is never left outside unsupervised -too small and too many small dog predators around (coyotes, bald eagles). And the container affected is in an out of the way spot he never gets to. I do have other pots of hens and chicks he could get to easily but he has shown no interest in them. The only thing he nibbles on outside is some grass.....and the occasional discovery of some wild bunny poop.

Slugs? Even tho' people say roly-polies are harmless, I have seen them munch tender bean seedlings.

LOL!! I certainly have plenty of slugs. And snails. But in all the years I've been growing hens and chicks, I have never seen them damage these plants. They tend to focus on the more tender new growth of herbaceous plants. As do rolly pollies. H&C's have pretty tough foliage for those little guys. And I think they would munch from the bottom up rather than from the top down,.

I'm still leaning to the bunnies for causing this :-)

Rabbits got a bunch of mine this winter. little monsters.

Following with interest because I have recently gotten interested in hens& chicks for winter containers on screened porch , which gets a lot of sun then, and we get some mild days when I can enjoy various hardy container plants there, but need to set any sun- lovers out in sunny parts of yard in S/S. Have deer, rabbits etc and have worried about going too deep in this direction because, chomping.

I do use some deer spray on a few hostas that are in unprotected areas, though I know they’re still at high risk!

Rats/mice? That's how I found out I had mice many years ago! They went after my string of pearls!

Squirrels? A friend has had huge trouble with squirrels that climb up to his roof and munch on his Haworthias. Or don't you have squirrels where you live?
