A stainless steel hood is definitely better. A black hood would absorb the light and be too dark. Your kitchen seems a bit dark, and could use the gleam of a stainless steel finish. It will not look "too modern". Also depending on what the black hood is made of, the black finish can scratch and show the metal underneath.

If your appliances are all stainless, I'd go with a stainless hood, too.
