Front Door Decor in Windy Cold State

Help! My front door is very unwelcoming and needs attention! However I live in ND which is very windy and cool most of the time. Can anyone offer me some budget and wind- friendly decor? I am hosting a Graduation in a few weeks and would love to add some fun decor to this depressing area. Thank you in advance- this group is always so helpful!

Greetings from the other side of the Red River in Minnesota! I understand your pain. What a long dreary winter it has been. What are your graduate's plans? Perhaps for the party you could add some pieces to the chair and table that symbolize the next steps? If your child is off to college, maybe toss a college throw over the chair, fly the college flag, add a wreath in the college colors, and add a pot of bright annuals with some embellishments for the school? Congrats to the graduate!

First of all, that cutie dog is plenty decor for the door!😊

I’d leave decor off the door and maybe get a rug and pillow for the chair that have some of the green from your door. I’d add some potted plants to the steps. A vase full of pretty fresh flowers on top of the table. Can you take a photo from farther back? The pros here will have lots of helpful suggestions.

IMO if wind is an issue then everything you use needs to be heavy enough to not get blown over , so no vases unless large and concrete .Maybe the pillow on the chair a big tub of plants what ever you can grow there right now . I agee no door decor.Maybe a pennant from the school or college attached somehow to the wall or maybe something like this for the door from Wayfair

You could also make a “bouquet” of a few school pennant flags to secure in styrofoam (or sand or rocks of windy) in a container on the table or a much larger container to set on the front entry concrete somewhere.

I second the idea of an indoor/outdoor rug or runner for the porch. Choose one that picks up the color of the door.

You should also cut back the grasses in the planter and add some pansys or tulips to the planter. Or consider sticking in forsythia or pussy willow branches. Then this summer make a plan to have this planter contribute winter interest in addition to the grasses. Ask your state agricultural department for suggestions for plants for your climate.

You could look at adding some outdoor lights, planters with a tree or some sort of plant that will last during the winter, you could also add a welcome mat, along with your house number, and perhaps some graduation decoration. Here are some ideas that might help you more below:

More diverse landscaping on the walkway will help. Heavy tall vases, with colorful long flowers and leaves, should be enough. The challenge with rugs is that the winter weather can ruin them.
