Vine growing in the Paccific Northwest

As you can see it's quite long growing atop this arbor walkway. This is in the south Seattle area.

Photos were taken last Sunday.

IMO a 'standard' is the way to go - while the pruning is needed throughout the growing season (and after the leaves drop making it easier to see the structure....) it's easy to do.

linaria - those are great pictures! Whoever is doing the pruning there is 'stricter' about it than we are - ours is a bit 'looser' than those but still controlled compared to the messy unpruned things that one sees fairly often! I find the Chinese one easier to control than the Japanese one. If I was planting them again, I'd only plant the Chinese type.

(In the picture below the Chinese one at the far end of the bed is just finishing blooming an the foliage starting to emerge. The Japanese one is in the foreground with the foliage emerged and the flowers hanging down under the foliage.)

some kind of Wisteria, if you meant to get an ID

I would keep up the pruning in order to avoid a big twniny mess on top of the arbor

ID is what I was looking for. I have only see Wisteria when it's in bloom. This is not mine, but good to know a bout the pruning.

Definitely a wisteria! Chinese and American types twine counterclockwise and the Japanese ones twine clockwise. It’s hard to tell which this is at this point. Generally the Chinese one bloomes before it leafs out and the Japanese and American ones bloom as or after the leaves emerge. My Chinese one looks like that one at the moment but growth timing might be different in Seattle. I agree that lots of pruning is needed for control. We grow ours as ’trees’, which makes pruning and control easier. IMO they are beautiful plants if controlled but monsters if they are not! DO NOT neglect your wisteria!

Truly!! I have seen a vining wisteria rip out a 4x4 deck upright due to the torquing action of the stem.

I have enough high maintenance plants in my garden. I think I'll let other people grow Wisteria. :o)
