IMO remove all the shelving wall mout the TV on an articulating arm on a nother wall get 2 nice pieces of art work one above each cabinet you will be left with . Paint the cabinets the same color as the walls but of course in a satin finish That will instantly change how thta wall looks for the better If you pst pics ,here in a comment , for us to see the whole room we can help much more

Does the colour of the fireplace suit the style of house? I might consider painting the mantle. Do you have a picture of the area where the fireplace meets the book case?

The brick on the fireplace is also on the house front so yes, it matches. Attached photo of front of house, and where fireplace meets book case. Also took a photo of most of the entire room. I would definitely consider painting the mantle and the bookcases.

Patricia, I like your idea about painting the bookcase, but can't move TV to another wall as there are no more walls, only windows on one side, hallway on the other and piano on opposite.

The large television hanging off your bookcase is a design issue. There are several ways to address it.

I have seen televisions that are made to look like art that sit over a mantle. It looks great, and you can change the art with the seasons. A picture frame comes with the television.

Or you need something that will visually support the TV. You could possibly hire a carpenter to amend the existing cabinet.

Or you could purchase a TV that fits the bookcase.

You do have a lot of different wood tones in that room. Painting the cabinets in the same color as the walls would minimize the visual impact of the bookcases. I am not sure that is a perfect solution, but it would be one less brown tone in your room.

Thank you! I like the idea of amending the cabinet so that the TV can hang inside it (it now is on an articulating arm that attaches to the side wall). It would fit, but a carpenter would have to remove the center beam and the cabinet would have to be reconfigured and painted, and I agree that it would look so much better! TV can't go above mantle since it gets too hot, would be too high, and we can't run the wires through the brick (we've thought about doing this earlier).

IMO, most of the room is beautiful, and I wouldn’t touch the brick - partially because I hate painted brick but also I think it’s a great, high-end design feature that it matches the exterior. I would focus on updating the mantel and bookcases. Something with color or what, but not more wood. I also like the idea of investing in a TV that looks like artwork and mounting it on the fireplace. I think Samsung makes them. Please don’t touch that ceiling! ETA: if I changed any wood, I would first paint the doors in the hallway and the exterior ones on the wall to match the wall color. And maybe get a bigger, colorful rug to break up the floor.

Here is the closest I could come to visualizing painting the cabinets and mantel the same color as the walls. The wall color seems to change due to lighting so not sure it's correct. Is this good or should we go darker? See second photo.

I like the darker color, much more than the light color. My suggestion is to match that darker brick, that is in your fireplace brick. I have to agree with the others, that tv looks bad where it is. Not only does it look bad, it looks, ready to fall on the floor at any moment. I would definitely try to do something else with it.

I would re-work the cabinet on the right to fit the TV. Even if everything else in this room was perfect, the TV mounted across the corner just detracts from everything else in the room.

I would not place a TV over the fireplace if the space above gets hot when a fire is lit.

Yes! That is exactly what I have planned. The carpenter is coming to redesign the left bookcase so that the TV will fit inside, or extend and rotate with an articulating arm, just like you mentioned.

My only decision now will be the bookcase paint color. I don't really want to paint them the same color as the walls, since I may want to change the wall color some day. Torn between white, which will the cabinet color in the rest of the house, or a color to coordinate with the brick. Any suggestions?
