ISO board and batten siding that lasts

We have vinyl siding on our house. We're putting in a large awning over our front door and changing the siding beneath the awning to a simple, white vertical siding. We could do board and batten or just a vertical. This is a north-facing, Wisconsin house and the front door sees very little use. It needs to look nice without much fuss. We do have livestock and animals that sometimes graze around the house. We're being discouraged from Hardie because of the silica dust, the fussy install, concerns about water seaping in and swelling, keeping everything caulked to JH standards for warranty and it's just been a pain to find someone that wants to sell it to us...

We won't use vinyl. What options are best for north-facing (prevailing wind, precip, etc). What brands should we consider that are relatively easy to install and with a long-life?
