Help with colors!

last modified: 3 years ago

Need help with Mastic vinyl siding colors! We had hail damage and need our vinyl siding, roof and garage doors replaced! We would love to change the color from tan to gray. Would Victorian Grey be too light ? We have off white stone and hope to get a white garage carriage style door. (3 stall) .I'm going crazy thinking if this gray will be too light.... what color roof do we use ?.... will it go with the off white stone ? What color door would be good ? Can anyone help with favorite color combinations ?

Oh gosh - do you think ?.....I can certainly try and see what they say ?

Maybe the scottish thistle with some sort of cream trim and garage doors ?.... or try to match the garage doors ?

here are some pretty houses with this color.....

I just struggle putting this on my house when it looks so different!!!

Love it. It is a change but not huge change. Garage door gets matching color of siding. SW has in their systems, many siding colors with the proper formulas. They can color match too. Have the installers give you a 6” or so piece and they can match it. A cream trim would be great. And you could have fun with a color for your front door.

I actually think your stone would look even better with the Thistle.

@Flo Mangan is right. That green works with your stone beautifully.

Your windows appear to have white frames and grids

Oh gosh ! I did not think about the window! It does have a white grid inside of it - hubby says it can not be taken out ! We have white around the door too ! I do have difficulties with hubby as he won't want to paint the garage door and have to deal with the upkeep of more paint a few years later. (I love to paint! :)) . The garage doors are C.H.I. brand and will need to see what colors they offer..... I can't do white around the doors and then cream trim, can I ?.... Shoot! This color does look good with the stone!!! You don't think it is too dark, do you ?.... or army green looking ?.....

Or maybe white and cream would work ? Looking at one of the houses on the link... is that white and cream together ?.....

    Front door and front window-

I have talked with hubby and he still would like to use some sort of gray. would any of the grays work with white trim? he does not want to paint the garage doors- maybe we could do a darker or lighter gray? with white trim on the house?

i guess this is what i get for marrying a superintendent that only worries about function.🙁

I gotta say, it is quite frustrating to say the least, to spend time giving professional advice, at no charge, and see your latest post. I am most willing to provide help, but at this point to have everything we have offered here just ignored is rather painful, as least to me. Others can speak for themselves. Good luck.

Oh im so sorry ! we are still looking over your great information but he asked me to check one more time if a gray could be used! i have appreciated all your suggestions and realize you are taking the time to offer professional help. thank you so much! again my apologies if you feel we arent using your terrific info.

please have a terrifc weekend and thank you again for your time.

If garage doors are staying the current color match siding to that color the best you can and do trim white. Any gray will probably clash with the current garage door color? Or go with white siding and trim the color of garage doors. If you properly prime the garage door and use good quality paint, the painted garage door will last for 10 years at least. All your choices.

You have a GOLDEN opportunity to give your home a “custom” look. Men tend to be much more prone to color blindness than women. So it would really help if you have a Sherwin Williams store near to go and ask for a color specialist to come to your home and give you on site true color advice.

I love this idea too!! i do know the sw store and gal that comes to the home to talk about colors! i will do this!!! i do love all of your color inspirations too!!! I’m at a soccer game now but plan on getting on the computer to look at them closer when i get home!!’😊😊

Sometimes if you show your husband all of us telling you that the green is the best color, we can influence him. Gray would be drab. Green will make your house look refreshed. If you need to stick with white trim, that is your compromise, but honestly, gray is wrong for your house.

    Let him read the thread.

Thank you for your kind note! I have come to that conclusion, too, about the green ! I have looked and looked at the scottish thistle and it is beautiful with the stone! I do believe as you all have suggested that this is the right color ! Yes, now to convince him and I do think this can be done! Good idea to use the "drab" reference and have him read the thread! I'm still looking at the thistle and white or thistle and cream for trim. (which I like much better).. also trying to think about the white around the front door and window and how that would look.... and figure out the best garage door solution. I'm afraid I won't be able to convince him to paint it as much as I ask - I did see the thistle with the almond garage door and white door...... ? (we need to use C.H.I. garage doors and am looking at their colors... would there be another color that could blend ....... tan? wood tone ?...). Still thinking about getting Mastic samples and having SW come just in case I can convince him (if I keep at it long enough!) and also on Monday the Mastic design service will respond too ! ......Like you all have said if I could get the siding picked I can go from there! :)

I am wondering what style home we have. It has been mentioned a couple of times. We purchased this as a spec home in 2007 while we were downsizing as our children went to college.

I don’t think labeling your home with a style is as important as when you drive up to it you smile and love it. It’s a lovely home and can’t wait to see how you “transform” it. I still think the Thistle is a great option but will be interested in what the color person from SW thinks. I appreciate your honesty and hope you get the perfect look for your home. And insurance pays for it! Can’t argue with that!! I hope we can influence your hubby away from gray. 😅

If your home has been rendered in the Scottish Thistle post the image for it. I would also have them render the house in Almond with white trim so you have some thing to compare it to.

A “builder spec” home is done to please as many potential buyers as possible so heavy on neutrals. Most are pretty lacking in personality. Gray has gone out of fashion and so a change to allow your stone to “sing” will be a beautiful update and add value to your home. Have you scheduled the SW Color person yet? Happy Mother’s Day.

Oh this is wonderful to be able to see on the houses like this! Thank you! So, you don't think the thistle looks good ?........ Would white trim work on any of these ?...or cream ? Or maybe that doesn't work for us ? I have seen the thistle with cameo ?........ I do want to say that I talked with hubby - he says other colors than gray on the house would be ok - but, we can not paint the garage. He can be very stubborn about things - (I could possibly change his mind, maybe?) . We will be getting new garage doors (sorry if I have been confusing about this) and can get something nicer if that would help at all ?..I'm not sure if they make a nicer garage door ?.. they do offer a variety of colors for the garage door... there is an almond if you think that would work ? We do not have any HOA requirements.... I love all the colors you picked but am not a fan of the last one. (I really am not a brown person so much even though it does look very good too). Thank you for taking the time and doing this ! I really am surprised how much I like each of them. What are your thoughts ?.....

Let's see what the vinyl company comes up with first before we explore any additional options.

Why do you require new garage doors? They are $$$ and your looks great with your home.

Yes actually they were really damaged by the hail we had. The siding, the roof and the garage doors were all damaged quite a bit and insurance will cover replacements. I went to the basement as the noise was so strange the hail actually took pieces of our siding off of our house. (if you could see the garage doors close up you could see the color is mottled and they have dents and will never look the same!).

Sounds great thank you again !

Well then you should be looking at garage doors NOW. They can be applied to your home photo

Yes for sure! I am trying to do that too ! I guess I haven't been very clear about it - :)

Thank you again for all your help! :)

We recently had new garage doors installed and there were quite a few colors from which you could choose. If you can get their color chips and somehow upload the colors here, perhaps the designers can help choose a great siding color to match one of the color chips. That way you won’t have to worry about painting the garage doors to match and everyone can be happy with the result!

Great idea ! Thank you ! Hope you are able to see these!! :)

In my research about the wood tones I did read not to get these as they fade so quickly - we will probably want to stay away from these due to this! Thank you for your help!

  • PRO

If the “wood tones” are “powdered coated” finish, they should not fade at all. Maybe you were reading about “stained wood” not metal or solid materials? Have you eliminated your desired white siding with sand trim.

  • PRO

Since it looks like your garage door options look quite limited, I would start there. They will drive other choices.

We did not eliminate white siding and sand trim. Do you think that would look good ?

I would like to see the white siding and white garage door with sand trim.

  • PRO

Can’t do a good mock up but white with a sand trim might work best. The other choices don’t excite me. With all white, white garage doors work because they would blend in with siding, assuming the whites are close matches!

    nancymoore1 thanked Flo Mangan

Thx for uploading the color chips. Our monitors are going to make them look different than they are in person, so we can only use them as a guideline. But it gives an idea of what you have to work with. I hope Beverly can do a mock up as Flo suggested of white with sand trim. Please keep in mind, and this is the voice of experience with regards the white garage doors, the white of your siding will need to be matched to the white of your new garage door and, to me, matching whites is almost harder than matching any other color. I got white garage doors and already had white porch railings that are quite prominent on my house and they do not match. The garage white is creamier and I can easily see the difference. Same with the trim around the garage doors. When you choose whatever overall color scheme for your house, based on the wise advice of the designers, try to get a sample chip from the actual garage door company to take with you to the paint store and/or siding company so that they can help you actually match the colors as closely as possible. I failed to get a sample from the company so I had to bring home white color chips and brought home probably 20 whites and looked at them in all lighting until I finally arrived at one that matches quite well - but it was a process.

Oh thank you for the mock up and white info! I did have the garage door chips but they did not want me to keep them but a day so I had to return them.... I am having a hard time getting info from the siding/roof contractor and have asked so many questions without response but will send a note to ask for samples from him today too! Hopefully that is something he can easily give me!

Whites are crazy to work with so perhaps the Linen? Just think you have to decide do you want more “contrast” in the overall color palette, or less contrast. Right now you have minimal contrast.

I think Home Depot carry this product
Line of siding. Give them a call and see if they do and if they have samples. Their paint department can also color match paint. That might help you a lot.

    nancymoore1 thanked Flo Mangan

Oh yes, you are correct I'm sure! I do like the linen color too ! I also like your design with almond and linen I believe that you had together!

I called the designing place and she said the people there do not all have design experience. They will do some mock ups but make it so I can make changes to the design. I am hoping to get this and post it for your opinion and maybe we can get a better idea on how it would all look ! I was hoping to visit with them about our ideas but I guess that is not how it works!

I will check with Home Depot!!! Thank you !

  • PRO

Basically, you have to do your own research. People "selling products" are "selling products". So doing mock ups is just a technical exercise for them, where designers take into consideration ALL elements to reach a good end point. ;)

So, no samples available at Home Depot as they are completely out. Here is the link for the colors from Ply Gem. I had given them the option to use any color but brown as there is just sooo much brown in the neighborhood. Please tell me .your thoughts or if there are colors you want to see that will help. I do like the color blue, and do like this... .but, I wanted to get your opinion if you have time! Thank you for all of your help!

I put this as a pin as I couldn't figure out how get it to copy for you to see! I'm afraid I am older and not real good at this sort of thing....

Nancy, I really like that blue, I think it’s fresh and calming looking. I also think the white garage doors and trim look pretty. But - disclaimer: I am not a designer! Just weighing in, for what it’s worth!

Not sure about the blue but better than other choices so far. But might not work great with white garage doors. Hard to get all these elements singing from the same song book. Right?
