Yes, the carpet is dated.

I'd paint the risers and balusters white to match the moldings, and the railings & treads black.

I would start with just painting the spindles white and see if it's updated enough for you.

I see either paint suggestion working but the carpet needs to go.

i would stain the floor dark, stain or paint the banister black and paint the spindles white. consider replacing the banister with a heavier one. definitely replace carpet, maybe with sisal.

I was thinking exactly what kfolb was. dark banister with white spindles would look great. ditch the carpet 'fo sho'

I think that if you just paint the spindles white then your carpet will take on a new life. I would suggest giving that a try before you go all out.

The carpet is very dated, rip it out. Painting the spindles and risers white is a nice classic look. The stain on the stairs is also dated. A dark, almost black stain would look fantastic. Or for a more classic look you could paint the whole thing white.

Thanks for all your replies. The carpet is in great condition but consensus seems (and I agree) that is is dated. Thanks for clearing that one up for me. Have tons of that honeyoak throughout the house so may just be limited to painting the spindles and risers white and leaving the steps honeyoak as well. Should I paint the banister a dark colour in that case? or leave it in the honeyoak colour? Any suggestions would be appreciated!. Thanks.
