I don't know anything about your location or gardening style, but in my garden G urbanum is a rampant self seeding, rather dull-looking, hard to remove native. I tend to leave a few in out of the way places for insects to use but generally I to remove them. And the id is not definite. If you wait for a flower we'll know.

allowing an ID to flower is a key aspect of ID... just make sure you dont let it go to seed .. as per floras experience.. speaking af which.. in the 10 or 15 years weve been here.. i cant think of her ever being wrong.. so i doubt you need to confirm her hatred of this plant.. lol..

we know the plants we love.. but we really know the plants we hate... lol ... its something along the lines of keep your loved ones close.. but your enemies closer ...

I do not hate G. urbanum. I don't hate any plant. But some I would rather not have in my garden, or at least not in quantity.

This is Geum canadense The leaves and stems are a perfect match. Geum canadense. I meant to say canadense but accidentally wrote avens instead. Sorry about the mix up! White Avens is the most common native Geum species in my area. It's very weedy and I don't allow it in my beds, but I let a few grow, in out of the way spots, for the insects and wildlife. Quite a few of the native NA Geum species look similar and in the eastern US. Geum canadense is the only species that has cauline leaves that are all trifoliate. There are 2 eastern Geum species that are attractive enough to be garden worthy and they are Geum triflorum, Prairie Smoke, and Geum rivale, Water Avens, which is also native to parts of Europe. The seedlings put down grasping roots quickly and aren't fun to remove. The seedlings will fill in and cover the soil comepletely, hindering the germination of seeds and the emergence of perennials.

I said above that it’s a Geum. The question was which species. The one I get here is Geum urbanum, Wood Avens. But without the flowers we don’t know if it is that one or perhaps G canadense. The leaves of some of the species are indistinguishable.
