Visit to a good lighting store to learn about different lighting options for an extended length while working with wiring for one light

It should not be a big deal to have that wired for more fixtures, that is a large island.

Almost square is bad, proportionately and functionally. An actual rectangle is far better for proportion and function both. Square is hard to light evenly. . One big central fixture isn’t going to work with that ceiling height. Or give good even lighting to an almost square work surface. Many smaller pendants will look busy and haphazard. Your best bet is to rewire for a lot more recessed lights, so you get even lighting to not chop off a finger. And get some posts under that overhang before that corner snaps off and kills someone.

My kitchen is much smaller and I have six can lights on two dimmer switches, three dimmable pendants and under cabinet lighting.

Arre you looking for pretty lighting or actual kitchen work station lighting? Is this just a dining table in the middle of the kitchen or is it a work station as well. Are you looking for lighting to just focus on the island or to supplement the kitchen potlights? A chandelier isn't going to help you with task lighting or help you see into the fridge. And that pot light off to the side of the fridge isn't helpful either.

You need to figure out what type of lighting you need/want (as opposed to what kind of "lights" you want) and get someone to help you with a plan. You may have natural light that you can also call on but that is not shown in the photo.

Hire a lighting designer.

not a pendant, a chandelier. Id keep it open, the island is heavy it kinda dwarfs the room.
