Whatever it is, it's treated/pelleted seed. Can't tell if the flake looking stuff is seed or something else. Maybe lettuce seed? Sometimes lettuce seed is pelleted.

Now, those look pretty big for cabbage seeds, so one might expect that they are indeed pelleted.

It's not cabbage. Cabbage seeds are dark and round. The seed in the bag is completely wrong to be in the brassica family.

And also, the kanji lookup and amazon listing is indeed helpful- it says lettuce right on the packet. Lactuca stavia is lettuce, not cabbage. Though if it's a variety like the amazon listing, it's possible the different colored pellets are different varieties of lettuce.

If, as people surmise, it is pelleted seed you wouldn't be able to see the seed itself. I would suggest breaking open a pellet to check. Or, in the absence of someone who can read the label, grow a few seeds out. Both lettuce and cabbage would reveal their identitiy within a couple of days.

Exactly right that pelleted seed isn't going to look anything like the seeds inside the pellets.

I should add that pelleting of seeds is done for planting convenience (whether manual or mechanical), but the pelleting process can decrease the lifetime of the seed. Best to use within a year.

Just because it looks like lettuce seed, and the kanji translates back to a seed packet reads the botanical name of lettuce seed with images of lettuce on the packet... it could be cabbage seed as dan suggests. Growing the seed out should provide a more positive ID fairly quickly.

Since it's in a ziploc and not an original seed packet, there is always the possibility that it's a mix of some different greens of different families too, and the person just wrote the kanji as a more generic name for the mix. Is it possible for you to ask the person that sent the packet?

Korean wraps are called "ssambap", and are usually done with lettuce, but sometimes with cabbage. The "ssam" just means "wrap" in Korean, and "bap" is rice. I think the ssamchae name is applied to a cabbage-like leaf because it too CAN be used for wraps. "chae" is something like "whole" or "all". But it's possible these seeds were just simplistically labelled ssamchae because whatever they are, it's good for wrapping.

Yep dan, you are right. There is no way that is lettuce seed, it is absolutely cabbage seed. Regardless of what grows out of that packet, it's a cabbage.
