Even if they are, they would be so far from the plants that they would not be helpful.

Those are incandescent bulbs so they get hot. Whether you can put them in a recessed housing in the ceiling will depend on the housing. This Halo H7 housing, for example, has a maximum bulb wattage of 75 watts and this Commercial Electric housing has a maximum bulb wattage of only 60 watts. There is probably a label inside your housings which will show the maximum wattage. Unscrew the bulb and take a look. Don't exceed the maximum wattage. If there's no label, I'd assume NO.

Next time, buy an LED grow light bulb such as this Feit 9-Watt BR30 LED Grow Light Bulb which will work in any recessed housing of the appropriate size, will generate far less heat, and will cost much less to operate.

And, Wdccruise, thank you for supplying that helpful informstion. Home Depot has it in stock and I’m picking it up tomorrow. Could you please also tell me what kind of light fixture would be appropriate for the two bulbs I already have?

Light diminishes by the square of the distance from the source, so a plant 6 ft from the light source will receive 1/36 of the light it would receive if the light was at 1 ft from the source. Neither bulb would be appropriate because you couldn't have the plant close enough for the light generated to make an appreciable difference w/o the heat generated being an issue.

Inverse square law:

The unit of difference doesn't matter. The law holds true be the unit of measure an inch a meter a mile or a light year.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, Home Depot has the LED grow lights that wdccruise recommended. Those are the ones I’m getting tomorrow. The ones I already have are going in the trash. Thanks again wdccruise and thank you Tapla for the information.

Agreed dont use them. i also wouldnt even bother with LED grow lights.

The light source will be too far away and nowhere near enough lumens to do any bit of good.

You need 400w+ equivalent for them to do much of anything and your fixtures arent rated for that.

Hmm, thank you everyone for your feedback. Seems like my idea of using the recessed light fixtures is a bust. I’m going to start a new thread and ask what is a good grow light setup to use at home. I have some succulents and tropical houseplants that don’t get enough light from my windows. Please look for my new thread and advise please.
